Dynamite on the Tropic of Cancer is the radical, explosive retelling of the first decade of the 'Father of Modern China' Dr Sun Yatsen’s globally shaped formation as a professional revolutionist, and of the impact of the adult Sun’s revolutionary relationship with Hawaiʻi and with his varied communities of supporters there during its own most turbulent political decade, the 1890s, years in which this remote island nation transformed from native monarchy, via sovereign independent republic, to become the USA’s first overseas territory. Drawn from neglected primary sources, Dynamite reveals the hitherto untold story of the secret revolutionary alliance forged in Honolulu’s backstreets between Sun’s Xingzhonghui and the idiosyncratic italophile soldier Robert Wilcox, "Hawaiʻi’s Garibaldi" and leader of the Kanaka/Native Hawaiian counterrevolution of January 1895. This failed uprising to restore Hawaiʻi’s tragic last Queen, witnessed firsthand by Sun Yatsen, became the archetype upon which ten months later Sun would base his own first attempt at armed insurrection in China: the Canton uprising of 26 October 1895. With an epic sweep across the Pacific’s Tropic of Cancer, Dynamite is the most important study yet written on the origins of Sun Yatsen’s Chinese Revolution and its dynamic interface with Hawaiian history.

The third and final volume of Asia Inside Out, Itinerant People focuses on the idea of "Diasporic Asia" - the meanings of the movement of people, past and present. Which specific groups and communities linked the trading empires of the South China Coast, South Asia, and the Middle East ? Who actually traveled in the ships, and who travels in our modern jumbo jets? The authors consider the varied experiences of important mobile ethnic groups and their modern descendants. It is no accident that many of the descendants of these traveling communities can still be found around the rim of the Indian Ocean - and that many have seeped up into the land- and sea-scapes of the South China coast. The book explores the transient histories of "people on the move," through voluntary or involuntary circulation, either part of chosen paths (such as migration) or the radials of coerced journeys (such as slavery, or the dislocations wrought by conflict). The fluidity of human movement has acted to render the evolution of "Asia" more complex, both reinforcing older connections across time and space and forging new connections.--

The theme of this volume is the American relationship with Macao and its region through trade, politics and culture, and the focus is mainly on the late 18th and 19th centuries. The essays address topics such as the role of the China trade in US pacific expansion and exploration, US consuls, smuggling networks, missionary and educational work, and American women's perceptions of China. In all of the encounters, Macao emerges as a central player, adding a new dimension to our understanding of Sino-American relations.

While the connected, international character of today's art world is well known, the eighteenth century too had a global art world. Eighteenth-Century Art Worlds is the first book to attempt a map of the global art world of the eighteenth century. Fourteen essays from a distinguished group of scholars explore both cross-cultural connections and local specificities of art production and consumption in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. The result is an account of a series of interconnected and asymmetrical art worlds that were well developed in the eighteenth century. Capturing the full material diversity of eighteenth-century art, this book considers painting and sculpture alongside far more numerous prints and decorative objects. Analyzing the role of place in the history of eighteenth-century art, it bridges the disciplines of art history and cultural geography, and draws attention away from any one place as a privileged art-historical site, while highlighting places such as Manila, Beijing, Mexico City, and London as significant points on globalized map of the eighteenth-century art world. Eighteenth-Century Art Worlds combines a broad global perspective on the history of art with careful attention to how global artistic concerns intersect with local ones, offering a framework for future studies in global art history.

Convinced that Napoleon was about to declare war once more, the British Government ordered a secret press of seamen in 1803. This book records how the ensuring events affected one man in particular, Joesph Bates, a 21-year old merchant seaman who proved to be of exceptional ability rising to the rank of lieutenant. The book is based largely on the logs of the two ships in which he sailed, the frigate, HMS Cerberus, and the sloop of war, HMS Racoon, supplemented by eye-witness accounts, official letters, medical notes and the secret diary of one of Joseph's shipmates. Pressed in Chatham on 6th May, a few days before Britain declared war on France, he spent the next 12 years before his release from the Royal Navy. The author brings to life the detail of everyday events on board as Joseph is promoted from able seaman servicing in the foretop to coxswain, quartermaster, midshipman, master's mate and lieutenant. Joseph's service, however, was full of more dramatic events: deaths by drowning, falls from the rigging, cholera or tuberculosis. He was engaged in battles, attacks on the French coast, the capture of a town in the Caribbean, an explosion in the Racoon that killed many of the crew and the near-sinking of the ship. But there were lighter moments: the celebrations on crossing the Equator and riding horses borrowed from the Mexican army. One highlight found in the secret diary of a shipmate is his single-handed attempt to transport a very large hog back to the ship. After 'capturing' the last American fort on the Pacific coast, Joseph's ship sailed to Hawaii and Tahiti, hunting American shipping. Her mission completed, Racoon once more rounded to the Horn and as a final duty escorted a convoy back to England. Joseph's service was ended.
