In this book, Roy Schafer offers a radical reconceptualization of Freudian metapsychology. When Freud wrote about his discoveries of the unconscious and the nature of psychic processes, he used the language of the prevailing scientific theories of his time -- energy, force, and mechanism. In contrast, Schafer sees psychoanalysis as an interpretive discipline, a human science that requires a language of its own, unencumbered by the old natural science concepts. Schafer proposes a new language for psychoanalysis, freed from the ambiguities and biases of mechanistic theory. His formulation is based on the notion of action, were "action" is understood to mean the widest variety of human behavior: perceiving, organizing, fantasying, wishing, and doing -- consciously and unconsciously. -- Description of the source book.

En 1896, dans une lettre restée célèbre à son ami Fliess, Freud présentait une conception originale du psychisme humain, sous la forme d’une série de registres d’inscriptions constitués au cours des temps archaïques de l’enfance, le passage d’un registre à l’autre étant marqué par un défaut de transfert intégral du sens. Ce faisant, Freud posait, à l’orée de la psychanalyse, deux principes qui vont rester des axiomes fondateurs du champ scientifique qu’il est en train de conquérir : que le langage constitue l’étoffe du sujet de l’inconscient, que cette étoffe tissée comme savoir insu (Unbuwusste) est impuissante à retenir la vérité dans ses mailles. Ce que Lacan transcrira de la barre qui, séparant le signifiant et le signifié, coupe le savoir de la vérité. En reprenant — à deux reprises — les thèses de la Lettre 52, en 1915, dans l’essai sur l’inconscient et, en 1924, dans un article sur la psychose, Freud consacre le statut de “parlêtre” du sujet en question pour la psychanalyse, en même temps qu’il détermine la place centrale du langage dans le champ nouveau qui se découvre devant lui. Le rappel de ce principe fondateur, établit la pertinence des travaux d’Andrée Tabouret-Keller, menés au confluent de la psychanalyse et de la linguistique.

L’un a trait à la relation entre langage et processus primaire, l’autre aux effets de la parole sur le devenir conscient des représentations inconscientes. Finalement, qu’est-ce que le langage pour un psychanalyste ’ Sous une forme ou une autre, la question revient régulièrement. La réponse va de Freud à Lacan en passant par Ferenczi. Cet ouvrage, modeste dans son propos, ne prétend pas à l’exhaustivité et s’en tient à quelques-uns des temps forts qui jalonnent la quête. Il est aussi un peu différent. Ramenant la diversité de la thématique du langage chez Freud à quelques intuitions majeures, l’auteur, en linguiste, montre à partir des énoncés proposés par Freud lui-même, comment la syntaxe inscrit la présence du sujet dans les mots qu’il se donne au fil de la cure. Les linguistes seront sans doute surpris de la richesse et la diversité des horizons linguistiques ouverts par Freud. Mais pour être fructueuse, la mise en jeu des analogies doit faire appel à la théorie linguistique. Les cliniciens trouveront ici, présentés de façon succincte, les concepts de base de la théorie des opérations énonciatives d’Antoine Culioli. Leur apport est décisif pour toute réflexion qui touche à la symbolisation.

A major influence on French intellectuals in the twentieth century, Jacques Lacan has been referred to as ‘the most controversial psychoanalyst since Freud’. This bibliography in two volumes, originally published in 1988, lists and describes works by and about Jacques Lacan published in French, English, and seven other languages including Japanese and Russian. It incorporates and corrects where necessary all information from earlier published bibliographies of Lacan’s work.
