An archaeological dig uncovers the secret history of Toronto’s long-forgotten first immigrant neighbourhood. In early 2015, a team of archaeologists began digging test trenches on a non-descript parking lot next to Toronto City Hall -- a site designated to become a major new court house. What they discovered was the rich buried history of an enclave that was part of The Ward -- that dense, poor, but vibrant 'arrival city' that took shape between the 1840s and the 1950s. Home to waves of immigrants and refugees -- Irish, African-Americans, Italians, eastern European Jews, and Chinese -- The Ward was stigmatized for decades by Toronto's politicians and residents, and eventually razed to make way for New City Hall. The archaeologists who excavated the lot, led by co-editor Holly Martelle, discovered almost half a million artifacts -- a spectacular collection of household items, tools, toys, shoes, musical instruments, bottles, industrial objects, food scraps, luxury items, and even a pre-contact Indigenous projectile point. Martelle's team also unearthed the foundations of a nineteenth-century Black church, a Russian synagogue, early-twentieth-century factories, cisterns, privies, wooden drains, and even row houses built by formerly enslaved African Americans. Following on the heels of the immensely popular The Ward: The Life and Loss of Toronto's First Immigrant Neighbourhood, which told the stories of some of the people who lived there, The Ward Uncovered digs up the tales of things, using these well-preserved artifacts to tell a different set of stories about life in this long-forgotten and much-maligned neighbourhood.

Grenada Uncovered distinguishes Grenada-a 120-mile tropical, Caribbean island- beyond the obvious notion that it is a tourist's paradise. It is the pictorial representation of a Grenada with rich history, pristine natural habitat, unmistakable developmental potential, and a people boldly desirous of progress. It reveals tidbits as simple as the appropriateness of names used in present-day Grenada and as complex as the meaning of the word, Grenada, in ancient Greece, Rome, and Persia. It covers topics germane to Grenada's international image: the rich harmony in its ethnic diversity; the wealth of islets that surround Grenada; livestock, fishing, and agricultural potential; historical treasures; and the resourcefulness of its people, whether in the making of locally derived toys or in the use of its waterways. A 246-page publication, Grenada Uncovered displays hundreds of full-color pictures that expose Grenada's beckoning aura; a tranquil landscape, reflective of confidence and composure; and a landscape that not only invites, but often seems to reward the pursuit of happiness. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Grenada Uncovered is an encyclopedia of Grenadian promise, fully substantiated in its representation of its unspoiled territories, breathtaking views, and coastal charm.

This book questions the value of the concept of 'agency', a term used in sociological and philosophical literature to refer to individual free will in archaeology. On the one hand it has been argued that previous generations of archaeologists, in explaining social change in terms of structural or environmental conditions, have lost sight of the 'real people' and reduced them to passive cultural pawns, on the other, introducing the concept of agency to counteract this can be said to perpetuate a modern, Western view of the autonomous individual who is free from social constraints. This book discusses the balance between these two opposites, using a range of archaeological and historical case studies, including European and Asian prehistory, classical Greece and Rome, the Inka and other Andean cultures. While focusing on the relevance of 'agency' theory to archaeological interpretation and using it to create more diverse and open-ended accounts of ancient cultures, the authors also address the contemporary political and ethical implications of what is essentially a debate about the definition of human nature.
