This book offers a systematic introduction to an understanding-oriented approach to multimedia content analysis. It integrates the visual understanding and learning models into a unified framework, within which the visual understanding guides the model learning while the learned models improve the visual understanding. More specifically, it discusses multimedia content representations and analysis including feature selection, feature extraction, image tagging, user-oriented tag recommendation and understanding-oriented multimedia applications. The book was nominated by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Computer Federation as an outstanding PhD thesis. By providing the fundamental technologies and state-of-the-art methods, it is a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers working in the field computer vision and machine learning.

Video Content Analysis Using Multimodal Information For Movie Content Extraction, Indexing and Representation is on content-based multimedia analysis, indexing, representation and applications with a focus on feature films. Presented are the state-of-art techniques in video content analysis domain, as well as many novel ideas and algorithms for movie content analysis based on the use of multimodal information. The authors employ multiple media cues such as audio, visual and face information to bridge the gap between low-level audiovisual features and high-level video semantics. Based on sophisticated audio and visual content processing such as video segmentation and audio classification, the original video is re-represented in the form of a set of semantic video scenes or events, where an event is further classified as a 2-speaker dialog, a multiple-speaker dialog, or a hybrid event. Moreover, desired speakers are simultaneously identified from the video stream based on either a supervised or an adaptive speaker identification scheme. All this information is then integrated together to build the video's ToC (table of content) as well as the index table. Finally, a video abstraction system, which can generate either a scene-based summary or an event-based skim, is presented by exploiting the knowledge of both video semantics and video production rules. This monograph will be of great interest to research scientists and graduate level students working in the area of content-based multimedia analysis, indexing, representation and applications as well s its related fields.

This book teaches students how to ask critical questions of the media, and gives them the analytical tools to answer those questions. By gaining a rich understanding of how the media play a role in society, both in giving pleasures and creating power relationships, students to become critical thinkers. Understanding the Media: Teaches the theoretical foundations and key concepts students need to get started on their own media studies Brings concepts to life with examples and case studies on everything from Harry Potter and Big Brother to the Occupy movement Shows the ‘how to’ with guided exercises and improves essay writing with a guide to the research literature Helps students take learning further with guided free online readings This is an essential guide to the how and why of understanding the media, perfect for students in media studies, sociology, cultural studies and communication studies. Analyzing Media Messages, Fourth Editionprovides a comprehensive guide to conducting content analysis research. It establishes a formal definition of quantitative content analysis; gives step-by-step instructions on designing a content analysis study; and explores in depth several recurring questions that arise in such areas as measurement, sampling, reliability, data analysis, and the use of digital technology in the content analysis process. The fourth edition maintains the concise, accessible approach of the first three editions while offering updated discussions and examples. It examines in greater detail the use of computers to analyze content and how that process varies from human coding of content, incorporating more literature about technology and content analysis throughout. Updated topics include sampling in the digital age, computerized content analysis as practiced today, and incorporating social media in content analysis. Each chapter contains useful objectives and chapter summaries to cement core concepts. useful objectives and chapter summaries to cement core concepts.

In order to prepare a successful research project, a qualitative researcher often must consult media documents of various types. Authors David L. Altheide and Christopher J. Schneider show readers how to obtain, categorize, and analyze these different media documents in this entry in the Qualitative Research Methods series. They look at traditional primary documents such as newspapers and magazines but also at more recent forms--television newscasts and cyberspace. The use of student examples of research protocols makes this book a useful primer in deriving meaning from the bombardment of media documents a qualitative researcher faces.
