Though scholars have explored various topics related to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), little empirical research has critically examined the increasingly changing racial demography and social diversity of HBCUs and their impact on HBCU stakeholders. This volume provides meaningful context and initiates discussion on the increasingly changing diversity of HBCUs. It: • offers new information that will help HBCUs be more intentional about creating an inclusive campus environment for all enrolled students, • discusses the experiences of LGBT, Latino/a, and other minority students enrolled at HBCUs, and • examines myths and historical contexts of HBCUs. Aside from the practical implications provided herein, the volume also provides salient context for researchers and policymakers interested in the diversification of HBCUs. Given the range and the depth of the issues covered, it is a must read for anyone interested in HBCUs in general and student success within these institutions specifically. This is the 170th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Higher Education. Addressed to presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other higher education decision makers on all kinds of campuses, it provides timely information and authoritative advice about major issues and administrative problems confronting every institution.

As more Americans are attending college, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are now in a position where they must directly compete with other institutions. While other colleges and universities might have more resources and stronger infrastructures, HBCUs provide better opportunities to meet the needs of students of color. Setting a New Agenda for Student Engagement and Retention in Historically Black Colleges and Universities explores the innovations that HBCUs can enact to better serve and prepare the next generation of African American leaders, and to be more competitive in the higher education landscape. As students need different forms of support throughout their academic career, it becomes necessary to engage them through mentorship, programming, and classroom management. This book is a valuable resource for educators and administration at HBCUs, sociologists, policy makers, and students studying education science and administration.

"The underrepresentation of African Americans in STEM fields in general, and in engineering in particular, according to John Slaughter "is at best benign neglect, and at worst active discrimination." In one of the first broad-based studies of the African American experience in engineering, Slaughter and his coeditors set out to describe the problem and propose workable solutions in the form of education and public policy initiatives. In this book, twenty-four eminent scholars address this shortfall from a wide variety of disciplinary angles. They draw insight from robust statistical analyses and contextualized analyses grounded in personal narratives of African American engineers and instructors at a diverse set of research institutions with evidenced-based approaches to their success in graduating African American engineers. This definitive volume will certainly be of interest to scholars and policymakers"--

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young people aged 18 to 25 are at a significant risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Primary developmental processes that place college students particularly at risk include the experience of intimacy, sexual desires and the centrality of the peer group. During these routine developmental processes, college students experiment with unprotected sex, multiple sex partners and alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which are contributing risk factors for HIV/STI infections. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV and other STIs is germane to promoting the sexual health of college students and reducing high HIV/STI infection rates among young people. This edited volume will provide innovative and cutting-edge approaches to prevention for college students and will have a major impact on advancing the interdisciplinary fields of higher education and public health. It will explore core ideas such as hooking up culture, sexual violence, LGBT and students of color, as well as HIV and STI prevention in community colleges, rural colleges and minority serving institutions.
