Excerpt from Universal Peace The sole reason that prompts me to publish this work on peace is my deep interest in the subject, which I consider the greatest and most laudable that has ever engaged the sober thought of a people. For years I have watched this universal movement, and have borne in mind the conclusions set forth in this book; but I had not considered the time auspicious or opportune for making these views public, for fear they might have been considered impracticable, idealistic and chimerical. Even to-day, while the influences that bind the world together in common interests are seen at work, I am not satisfied that my most worthy and learned reader will not consider me a dreamer, and I can' ask only for his indulgence while I portray the future in the colors of the past, sincerely hoping that time will bear me out in my predictions, which are based entirely upon historical facts. It is the aim of the following pages to set in as clear a light as possible the relation between the Bible and the hope of universal peace. This is done, primarily, not in the interest of peace, tho that is dear, but in the interest of truth. Even war is not SO hateful nor so permanently injurious to the race as the misuse of the Bible in support of war. But a growing echo of the heavenly music is filling the hearts of men, and the time will come, the blessed time will come When the whole world gives back the song Which now the angels sing. Now we are in the third era, and earnest men and women are working, determined to put an end to the arbitrament of the sword. The coming music will not tell of the pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war, but will be a refrain of the angelic song, "Peace on earth." Our own loved land witnesseth the strength of the struggle and will be the great leader. And this is so notwithstanding present shouting for a larger navy.
