Excerpt from Universal Wiring Computer In submitting to the public the accompanying new system for determining the size of leads without calculations, the author desires to say that he has endeavored to make the charts as simple and practical as possible; but, as in other new departures, it is possible that such proportions as the dimensions of the scales, their ranges, the size of the charts, the limit of accuracy, etc., might be more advantageously chosen so as to bring the average values to the best parts of the charts. As the values for the usual determinations have such very wide limits, it is difficult to determine on the best proportions of the charts except by long and repeated use in practice under widely differing circumstances. Since this can best be done by the aid of those using this system under different circumstances, the author appeals to those using these charts to aid him in finding the most convenient proportions, by suggesting to him any changes in the present proportions gained from actual experience with the charts. Such changes will, if practicable, be embodied and duly acknowledged in subsequent editions, of which copies will be sent to those to whose kindness the author owes the changes. As its title indicates, this book is intended to facilitate the computing of the size and quantity of wire used for wiring; it is not a treatise on wiring, but assumes a knowledge of wiring on the part of the reader. It is intended for a book of reference, and not for a book of instruction. The auxiliary tables, which were almost all calculated for this book, are limited to those which wiremen frequently have occasion to refer to. The author is indebted to his friend Richard W. Davids for some practical suggestions, and to the Electrical Engineer for the use of some of the illustrations. Making Sense of Inner Sense 'Terra cognita' is terra incognita. It is difficult to find someone not taken abackand fascinated by the incomprehensible but indisputable fact: there are material systems which are aware of themselves. Consciousness is self-cognizing code. During homo sapiens's relentness and often frustrated search for self-understanding various theories of consciousness have been and continue to be proposed. However, it remains unclear whether and at what level the problems of consciousness and intelligent thought can be resolved. Science's greatest challenge is to answer the fundamental question: what precisely does a cognitive state amount to in physical terms? Albert Einstein insisted that the fundamental ideas of science are essentially simple and can be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone. When one thinks about the complexities which present themselves in modern physics and even more so in the physics of life, one may wonder whether Einstein really meant what he said. Are we to consider the fundamental problem of the mind, whose understanding seems to lie outside the limits of the mind, to be essentially simple too? Knowledge is neither automatic nor universally deductive. Great new ideas are typically counterintuitive and outrageous, and connecting them by simple logical steps to existing knowledge is often a hard undertaking. The notion of a tensor was needed to provide the general theory of relativity; the notion of entropy had to be developed before we could get full insight into the laws of thermodynamics; the notice of information bit is crucial for communication theory, just as the concept of a Turing machine is instrumental in the deep understanding of a computer. To understand something, consciousness must reach an adequate intellectual level, even more so in order to understand itself. Reality is full of unending mysteries, the true explanation of which requires very technical knowledge, often involving notions not given directly to intuition. Even though the entire content and the results of this study are contained in the eight pages of the mathematical abstract, it would be unrealistic and impractical to suggest that anyone can gain full insight into the theory that presented here after just reading abstract. In our quest for knowledge we are exploring the remotest areas of the macrocosm and probing the invisible particles of the microcosm, from tiny neutrinos and strange quarks to black holes and the Big Bang. But the greatest mystery is very close to home: the greatest mystery is human consciousness. The question before us is whether the logical brain has evolved to a conceptual level where it is able to understand itself.

It is unanimously accepted that the quantum and the classical descriptions of the physical reality are very different, although any quantum process is "mysteriously" transformed through measurement into an observable classical event. Beyond the conceptual differences, quantum and classical physics have a lot in common. And, more important, there are classical and quantum phenomena that are similar although they occur in completely different contexts. For example, the Schrödinger equation has the same mathematical form as the Helmholtz equation, there is an uncertainty relation in optics very similar to that in quantum mechanics, and so on; the list of examples is very long. Quantum-classical analogies have been used in recent years to study many quantum laws or phenomena at the macroscopic scale, to design and simulate mesoscopic devices at the macroscopic scale, to implement quantum computer algorithms with classical means, etc. On the other hand, the new forms of light – localized light, frozen light – seem to have more in common with solid state physics than with classical optics. So these analogies are a valuable tool in the quest to understand quantum phenomena and in the search for new (quantum or classical) applications, especially in the area of quantum devices and computing.
