Unlikely Radicals

For twenty-two years politicians and businessmen pushed for the Adams Mine landfill as a solution to Ontario’s garbage disposal crisis. This plan to dump millions of tonnes of waste into the fractured pits of the Adams Mine prompted five separate civil resistance campaigns by a rural region of 35,000 in Northern Ontario. Unlikely Radicals traces the compelling history of the First Nations people and farmers, environmentalists and miners, retirees and volunteers, Anglophones and Francophones who stood side by side to defend their community with mass demonstrations, blockades, and non-violent resistance.

Free Radicals in Biology, Volume V covers the mechanisms for the generation of free radicals. This volume contains eight chapters that discuss the biology and chemistry of oxy-radicals in mitochondria and the radical-mediated metabolism of xenobiotics. The opening chapter describes the mechanisms of free radical production in enzymatically promoted lipid peroxidation, generally in microsomes or microsomal lipids. The subsequent chapters explore the biochemistry and biology of plant and animal lipoxygenases; the production of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in mitochondria; and the biological role of these species in mitochondria and related systems. The discussions then shift to the effects of superoxide production in white blood cells, with an emphasis on an evaluation of the oxygen-dependent reactions of the important phagocytic cells, the monocytes, and the polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Reactive Free Radicals deals with the chemistry of reactive free radicals. The initial premise is that the reactivity of a free radical depends upon its shape and therefore upon the character of the orbital(s) containing the unpaired electron. Based on this premise, a possible explanation for some of the fascinating phenomena observed in a number of free radical reactions such as combustion and pyrolysis is offered. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with a brief overview of the chemistry of free radicals, what they are and how they are formed, and their structure and reactivity. The emphasis is on those characteristics of free radicals attributable directly to the unpaired electron function. The reader is then introduced to the techniques used for the determination of the structure of free radicals, including electron spin resonance spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. Subsequent chapters focus on bond dissociation energies and some of the complications arising from polar and non-polar effects in free radical reactions. This monograph should serve as a valuable reference for organic chemists as well as undergraduate and graduate students of organic chemistry.

This volume contains the lectures presented at the International School of Radiation Damage and Protection at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Sci entific Culture in Erice, Italy, September 6-15, 1985. The sixth course of the School, entitled "Advances in Applications, Biological Effects, and Dosimetry of Ultrasound," provided an in-depth review of all facets of ultra sound interactions and their biological effects on living systems, allowing an assessment of the hazard potential of the various applications of ultra sound. Particular reference was made to possible health risks associated with medical ultrasound exposure since this use is by far the most prevalent. Since the initial application of ultrasound to submarine detection, medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications have become predominant over the past 20 years. The question of safety of this physical agent is an extremely important one. In many industrialized countries most pregnant women receive at least one diagnostic ultrasound examination before the birth of the child. Thus, potential hazards to the fetus are of prime concern. This problem has been aggravated by the fact that the medical diagnostic applications of ultrasound have far outpaced research efforts on biological effects. A further compounding factor of concern to clinicians and scientists has been the use of higher and higher intensities by the manufacturers of ultrasound equipment, particularly higher peak pulse intensities.

Drawing from extensive archival research, the book uncovers the American media system's historical roots and normative foundations. It charts the rise and fall of a forgotten media-reform movement to recover alternatives and paths not taken.

Part history, part biography, this book describes the issues that produced the passionate activism of the 1960s and the campaigns waged at Princeton University by Students for a Democratic Society, the most important radical organization on campuses at the time. The author traces the lives of nine leaders of the Princeton SDS chapter, examining the effect of their participation in the radical movement on their career choices and subsequent political opinions. A number of these former activists are still involved in efforts to create a more egalitarian society, the same goal that motivated them half a century ago.
