In the tradition of Don Brown's critically acclaimed, full-color nonfiction graphic novels The Great American Dust Bowl and Sibert Honor winning Drowned City, The Unwanted is an important, timely, and eye-opening exploration of the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, exposing the harsh realities of living in, and trying to escape, a war zone. Starting in 2011, refugees flood out of war-torn Syria in Exodus-like proportions. The surprising flood of victims overwhelms neighboring countries, and chaos follows. Resentment in host nations heightens as disruption and the cost of aid grows. By 2017, many want to turn their backs on the victims. The refugees are the unwanted. Don Brown depicts moments of both heartbreaking horror and hope in the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis. Shining a light on the stories of the survivors, The Unwanted is a testament to the courage and resilience of the refugees and a call to action for all those who read.

This study builds on five years of ethnographic research with an all-male group of fifty-five Muslim second-generation immigrant drug dealers in Frankfurt, Germany, and examines the relationship among immigration, social exclusion, and the informal economy. In particular, the study explores the intimate and interactive aspects of the lives of this group of second-generation Muslim immigrants, who belong to one of, if not the most, discriminated against and socially excluded populations in German society.

A remote lodge in upstate New York is the perfect winter wonderland getaway . . . until the bodies start piling up. It's winter in the Catskills and the weather outside is frightful, but Mitchell's Inn is so delightful! The cozy lodge nestled deep in the woods is perfect for a relaxing--maybe even romantic--weekend away. The Inn boasts spacious old rooms with huge wood-burning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or just curling up with a book and someone you love. So when the weather takes a turn for the worse and a blizzard cuts off the electricity--and all contact with the outside world--the guests settle in for the long haul. The power's down but they've got candles, blankets and firewood--a genuine rustic experience! Soon, though, a body turns up--surely an accident. When a second body appears, they start to panic. Then they find a third body. Within the snowed-in paradise, something--or someone--is picking off the guests one by one. They can't leave, and with no cell service, there's no prospect of getting the police in until the weather loosens its icy grip. The weekend getaway has turned deadly. For some couples, it's their first time away. For others, it will be their last. And there's nothing they can do about it but huddle in and hope they can survive the storm.

A two-year-old biracial American girl brought to China on the eve of the Communist takeover endures societal discrimination and maternal betrayal as she struggles over 30 years to maintain her identity as an American and to return to the United States. Among the first wave of educated youth sent from the cities to the countryside two years before the Cultural Revolution, she spends 9 years in Xinjiang, China's rugged far west. There, as part of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, she travels through the Taklamakan Desert on an unusual mission and faces the Soviet army and near-starvation while forging friendships with the Uyghur inhabitants. Returning to Beijing, she manages to contact the U.S. Liaison Office there to establish her American citizenship in the face of strong opposition from the Chinese government and in 1978 becomes the first American involuntarily held in China to return to the United States since the Korean War. Back in the United States and tasting freedom at last thanks to her resourcefulness and the work of U.S. Department of State officials, she is determined to fit in despite the different culture and the challenges of a new language she was not allowed to learn in China. Her knowledge of Communist China, rare in the United States at that time, makes her a sought-after resource by a number of government offices and private businesses. She marries an American diplomat and travels to Taiwan where she looks to the future with the determination and optimism that have taken her so far.
