"Gamma radiation is a penetrating form of electromagnetic radiation arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. This type of radiation imparts the highest photon energy, and while it can damage the human body, it also provides several practical applications. Chapter One describes the application of gamma radiation for the sterilization process in medical devices, the food industry, and nuclear power plants, as well as its behavior, properties, and other applications. Chapter Two deals with the effects induced by gamma radiation, new research focused on the changes caused by gamma radiation, and the contributions of dosimetry to the understanding of gamma radiation. Chapter Three describes the use of radiation for inducing mutations in modern plant breeding. Chapter Four analyzes the effects of gamma irradiation on different carbon-based nanomaterials. Lastly, Chapter Five addresses the importance of using polylactic acid and gamma radiation for producing novel polymer composites, which enhance their sustainability and environmental aspects"--

The preservation of world cultural heritage is a key issue for maintaining national identity and understanding the influences or exchanges among civilizations throughout history. Development of appropriate preservation techniques that do not compromise longevity or authenticity are therefore of utmost importance. Radiation techniques have demonstrated significant success in the disinfestation and preservation of cultural heritage artefacts, and national and international research programmes have developed harmonized methodologies for such radiation treatment. This publication provides state of the art knowledge on radiation technology applied to the conservation and consolidation of items of cultural heritage and will be of use to collection curators, conservators, restorers, registrars, art historians, archaeologists and conservation scientists active in the various fields of cultural heritage in museums, libraries, archives, archaeological institutions, historical buildings and conservation workshops.

Gamma-rays originate from the decay of excited states of the atomic nuclei in a similar manner as the visible light originates from the decay of the atom itself. Gamma rays belong to the class of ionizing radiation, together with alpha rays (doubly ionized atoms of helium) and beta rays (electrons). The spectroscopy of gamma rays, having the unique feature that by photo-effect transform their total energy to the energy of electrons in the detection material, contributed decisively to the establishing of the decay schemes of atomic nuclei. Strong sources of gamma radiation are widely used in contemporary technologies for cancer treatment, material modification, medical imaging, and food sterilization. The main goal of this book is to present to the non-specialist reader the contemporary applications of gamma rays by selected chapters on that issue. This book has 16 selected chapters from basic application of gamma rays to applied issues like food sterilization and polymer modification.
