Frazer thus shows the estimation in which the Vedas were held, and the care taken to preserve their being known to any except the twice-born castes: To all orthodox Hindus they are held as having been breathed forth as a divine revelation from before all time. The reducing of them to writing, and even the hearing of their recitation by foreigners, or by any but the twice-born castes, is still looked upon as sacrilege and profanation by those who claim the sole right to hear their sacred sound.
