Mass shootings have been on the rise in the United States since the early 2000s, but until the heartbreak of the 1 October 2017 Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, the citizens of Las Vegas had never experienced the violence and tragedy of this now all-too-frequent occurrence. That day, fifty-eight people were shot to death on site, while another two victims later died of their injuries. The 1 October incident physically wounded nearly 900 concert-goers, but psychologically impacted countless untold victims. As individual and institutional response to urgent requests for help came in both during and after the 1 October catastrophe, those who call Las Vegas home struggled to cope with pain and grief. Now, editor Roberta Sabbath draws together a collection of personal essays, oral histories, interviews, scholarly writings, and commentaries to remember those whose lives were lost, and to honor survivors and their loved ones. Written five years after the tragedy, each contribution offers a unique story of healing, demonstrating the wide-ranging experiences and repercussions of the event. The essays in this collection represent a broad diversity of voices from political leaders, health professionals, first responders, community members, and incident survivors. On Sunday, October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire from thirty-two floors above a crowd of concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas Strip. The event left fifty-eight people killed, more than 860 injured, and thousands psychologically wounded. To date, this was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in the last seventy years. Despite the chaos and terror, first responders, concert-goers, and passersby aided victims and survivors. Nearby businesses, hotels, and the university provided safety and services. Medical personnel rushed to area hospitals. And as the scope of the tragedy unfolded, the people of Las Vegas flooded blood donation centers and offered food, water, comfort, and care. And they created a garden—The Las Vegas Community Healing Garden. The story of the garden unfolds through photographs and the words of survivors, first responders, family members, medical professionals, counselors, and members of the community. In only a matter of days, volunteers and local businesses transformed a vacant downtown lot into a serene urban oasis. Families and friends of those lost in the tragedy soon adopted each of the fifty-eight trees planted in honor of their loved ones, and visitors left behind colorful mementos, including painted rocks, photographs, and ornaments, as well as words of encouragement, love, loss, and strength. In the aftermath of 1 October, an often misunderstood city revealed its soul under the most heartbreaking of circumstances. The inspirational voices and stories from a community touched by tragedy provide comfort and encouragement. And the organic response to the unthinkable is a testament to how one community came together at its darkest hour, chose hope over despair, unity over hate.

When my best friend gets hospitalized, it sets of a chain reaction, that throws me closer to the one man I should never even look at, never mind anything else, as he embodies everything I despise about Club life. He is cold, hard and dark, sexy and his need for absolute control evident in the way he lives. Yet his steel grey eyes are difficult to avoid. He is everything I shouldn’t want, but maybe his dark is what I need right now to manage my anxiety ? I am confused and stay away from him and the club as much as I can, trying to avoid him, and giving my tormentor the chance of chasing me down. Instead, I concentrate on my job and my friends . It is getting harder and harder though and my secrets are threatening to take me down into a big deep dark hole. Can I confide in this man without an internal war breaking out? My grandmother brought me up when my mother couldn’t or wouldn’t, not sure, never asked, never bothered me. I had a great upbringing and my grandmother loved me as much as she instilled values into me. Values that match with those of my chosen family. I’ve been with the Stormy Souls for many years and they are my life. I witnessed leadership changes and experienced the Club slowly changing from pure 1% er, to a Club that earns it’s money by completely legal means, gives a shit about it’s members and their families. I am not a good person, and I am not proud of everything I have done and would still do in my Club’s name, but I am proud to see that I’ll protect my chosen family with everything I have. I don’t want a woman hanging off me, depending on me. The concept of an old lady makes me smirk and run a mile. I have very distinct tastes when it comes to women. My taste are dark, driven by the need for control and I like it like that . I only play with willing females under certain parameters. That way there is no confusion as to the state of affairs. I am not a hit it and quit it kinda guy, I prefer to play with one woman, who is completely under my control, serving my needs. For two long years, I have been haunted by a set of deep green eyes, belonging to everything I shouldn’t want in a woman. I know she is untouchable and that is fine by me, it keeps my dark urges at bay. Just lately circumstance – call it fate if you like—has other ideas though and we seem to be thrown together through one event or another. I am sorely tempted. But it would cost me dearly, too dearly to get involved. Yet I am unable to severe that connection we have.
