A hybrid machine--powered at times by steam, electricity or internal combustion--the motorcycle in its infancy was an innovation to help bicycle racers go faster. As motor age technology advanced, the quest for greater speed at the velodrome peaked, with riders reaching speeds up to 100 kph on bikes and trikes without brakes, suspensions or gear boxes. This book was written by Ed Bargy with well over five decades experience in the motor racing field. Ed's first exposure to the race track was NASCAR dirt oval racing in upstate NY at the age of 9. Ed started motorcycle road racing in the sixties while stationed in the UK with the USAF. Ed has gone on to hold every position in the motorcycle road racing sport from a national level racer to senior national race official, race promoter and racing school founder/owner. Ed has seen firsthand what works and what does not work on the race track. Most road courses of today were primarily designed for automobile racing. In 1911, the operators of Coney Island's Luna Park premiered a miniature, radically banked racetrack for staged automobile races that seemed to defy gravity.
