Its always nice to have some idea of what to expect from a book before starting to read it. Im happy to oblige. Within these pages, you will encounter philosophy, satire, fictional and nonfictional fiction, some rants about the state of automobile travel in the twenty-first century, and even a tiny bit of verseall mixed in with a healthy dose of wisdom gleaned from authors who admittedly have much more right to be in print than I do. A word about the fictional and nonfictional fictionif I have done my work successfully, you wont be able to tell the difference although members of my family and those who know me well may recognize me themselves and a number of actual events that I have woven into the chapters. Some of these tales are memoirs, and most are primarily about ideas. I have chosen this format to avoid punishing the innocentor the guilty, as the case may be. (I number myself among those in the latter category.) I leave it to the reader to decide where truth leaves off and fantasy begins. Throughout these twenty-one chapters, prepare to discover an empathetic detective, two unbidden pregnancies, two exceptional house cats, atheists and fanatics, an unlikely murderer, and two lonely souls at the opposite ends of life. I also offer you a fictional professor and his explorations into ethics, morality, society, religion, and even the meaning of time, a topic of some concern to all of us but especially to those who, like myself, are running out of that commodity. The professors name is Noah Armstrong, and in the novella Responsibility, he faces a very real crisis in his personal life. Noah and his students are amalgams of many persons I have known over thirty-six years of full-time teaching at Acadia University in Wolfville (with a little bit of myself thrown in here and there for good measure). You may be tempted to assume that the opinions and positions that emerge from the professors classes are my own. Some are; some arent. If I have learned anything after almost eight decades of living, it is that when once I believed I knew a lot about how the universe functions, I am now faced with far more questions than answers. But that didnt stop me from having my say.

We (Americans) have always borrowed from others. When the cavemen (the first men on earth according to scientists) were on the earth, they borrowed one anothers hammer for making the wheel. Can you imagine seeing a caveman asking his friend to borrow his hammer to help him make a wheel?

Patricia Wetzel offers in this volume a comprehensive examination of a frequently discussed yet much misunderstood aspect of the Japanese language. Keigo, or “polite language,” is often viewed as a quaint accessory to Japanese grammar and a relic of Japan’s feudal past. Nothing, Wetzel contends, could be further from the truth. It is true that Japan has a long history of differentiating linguistic form on the basis of social status, psychological detachment, emotional reserve, and a host of other context-dependent factors. But, as is made clear in this unique and broadly framed study, modern keigo consciousness and keigo grammar emerged out of Japan’s encounter with Western intellectual trends in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Keigo in Modern Japan presents a finely nuanced linguistic and political review of keigo available nowhere else in English. The first chapter outlines the ways in which keigo has been problematized in Western linguistics through the application of structuralist analysis and its offshoots. But keigo’s presence in the English-language literature does not begin to compare with the place it occupies in the Japanese linguistic canon. Wetzel describes the historical roots and growth of keigo and the popularity of how-to manuals, which, she contends, are less about overt instruction than reinforcing what people already believe.

The fifth and final volume of the Collected Letters of Katherine Mansfield covers the almost thirteen months during which her attention at first was firmly set on a last chance medical cure, then finally on something very different - if death came to seem inevitable, how should one behave in the time that remained, so one could truly say one lived? Mansfield's biographers, like her friends, have wondered at the seemingly extraordinary decision to ditch conventional medicine, for the bizarre choice of Gurdjieff's Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man at Fontainebleau. These letters show the clarity of mind and will that led to that decision, the courage and distress in making it, and the gaiety even once it was made. She went against what her education, her husband, and most of her friends would regard as reasonable, as she opted to spend her last months with Russian émigrés and a strange assortment of Gurdjieff disciples (which she was not). But Fontainebleau give her the space and the incentive to shake free from the intellectualism that she thought the malaise of her time, as she worked at kitchen chores, took in the details of farm life, tried to learn Russian, and attempted to reach total honesty with herself. 'If I were allowed one simple cry to God,' she wrote in one of her last letters, that cry would be I want to be REAL.'
