In the 18th century, Chladni developed the technique of drawing a violin bow across a metal plate of sand and observing the patterns that formed. In this title, Lauterwasser extends the idea to more complex and moving sounds in water, ranging from pure sine waves to music by Beethoven, Stockhausen and overtone chanting.

Exploring the paranormal through musical phenomena, this encyclopedia covers a range of anomalies, from musical mediumship to locations throughout the world where music has been heard with no obvious source. Other manifestations, such as the abilities of musical savants and the anesthetic use of music during surgical procedures, are included with a focus on paraphysical aspects. Entries describe examples from earliest history up to the present--interpretation is left to the reader. Broader themes and concepts are discussed in appendices, with additional references provided for further study.

The findings of this book are drawn from a conference held in 2013 in Kaunas, Lithuania, titled “Music and Technologies 2”, which provided a continuous discussion on the interdisciplinary music research developing currently at such important forums as the CIM (Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology) and the ISMIR (International Society for Music Information Retrieval). This book consists of a collection of articles written by musicologists and musical performers, sound engineers, and educators from Europe and the USA. Leading contemporary ideas in the field of music technologies are explored, as are some aspects of the cognition of classical and contemporary music.

Aloysius Bertrand’s Gaspard de la Nuit (1842) is a familiar title to music lovers, thanks to Ravel’s piano work of the same name, and to specialists of French literature, especially those interested in Baudelaire’s prose poetry. Yet until very recently the collection and its author have generally been viewed almost exclusively through the prism of their pioneering role in the development of the prose poem. By placing Bertrand back in his original context, adopting a comparative approach and engaging with recent critical work on the collection, Valentina Gosetti proposes a substantial reassessment of Gaspard de la Nuit and promotes a new understanding of Bertrand in his own terms, rather than those of his successors. Through his playful and ironic reinterpretation of Romantic clichés, and his overt defiance of the boundaries of poetry and beauty, Bertrand emerges as a fascinating figure in his own right. This book is one of the first full-length studies of Bertrand’s work, and it will be of particular interest to specialists of the nineteenth century and of provincial literature, and to students of nineteenth-century poetry or the fantastic.

This original and radical book challenges dominant parameters of literacy by comparing the oral tradition of the Tamils in South India with the Western culture of printed text. In India, traditional texts are always performed; as a result, form and meaning can change depending on the occasion. This is the opposite of Western communication through publication which is a static representation of knowledge. The author examines the reasons for the differences between the Indian and Western textual traditions, and describes how text lives through the performing arts of words, sound and imagery. She argues that interactive multimedia is the first Western communication form to represent oral traditions effectively.
