In his vivid, lively account of how Greek Cypriot villagers coped with a thirty-year displacement, Peter Loïzos follows a group of people whom he encountered as prosperous farmers in 1968, yet found as disoriented refugees when revisiting in 1975. By providing a forty year in-depth perspective unusual in the social sciences, this study yields unconventional insights into the deeper meanings of displacement. It focuses on reconstruction of livelihoods, conservation of family, community, social capital, health (both physical and mental), religious and political perceptions. The author argues for a closer collaboration between anthropology and the life sciences, particularly medicine and social epidemiology, but suggests that qualitative life-history data have an important role to play in the understanding of how people cope with collective stress.

James, a 16 year-old street-wise shipping clerk and Kathleen, a 14 year-old, self-willed grammar school girl, meet in London in 1946. They fall deeply in love. But because of James' seemingly shiftless manner and pressure from members of Kathleen's family they drift apart. While James is away on National Service Kathleen meets Craig, whom she later marries, but realizes before the honeymoon is over that she can never be happy with him. James returns and he and Kathleen renew their relationship as passionate lovers. Kathleen becomes pregnant. But Craig accepts her infidelity and refuses to divorce her. Realizing the futility of their situation Kathleen and James go their own ways, hoping that somehow, some day, they will be re-united.

For as long as there have been armed forces there have been camp followers – the families who move with the military to stay with their men. This book looks at the experiences of just a few of these families, through the eyes of the military wives and their relatives. From the First World War, when many women were fiancées but never wives, through the Second World War and postwar Britain to the present day and twenty-first-century service life, military wives talk about their experiences as never before. What is it really like to be married to a member of Britain's Armed Forces? Can you ever be prepared for the reality that awaits you when you say 'I do' and walk down the aisle? From Big Bertha's booms, rationing and bomb shelters, to military wives choirs, Afghanistan and marathons, this book celebrates that great British heroine, the military wife.

Providing a detailed account of Israel's foreign policy towards the Cyprus question between 1946 and the declaration of Cypriot independence in August 1960, Gabriel Haritos examines the international and regional factors which shaped Israel's approach to diplomatic relations with the independent Republic of Cyprus. Based on newly available archival material from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, declassified at the author's request, and on archival material collected from both sides of the Cypriot divide, Haritos highlights previously unknown events, and the key personalities involved in Israel's political and diplomatic interactions over the Cyprus question. In doing so, he offers key insights into the Middle Eastern aspect of the unresolved Cyprus conflict.
