Critically acclaimed when first published in France in 1946, and now in a new translation, this is a lightly fictionalized account of a true story of a Jewish family's desperate attempts to lie low in a Nazi-dominated World War II France Having emigrated from Budapest and Warsaw respectively, Nathalie and Ladislas Gara originally came to Paris to seek the university educations that their Jewish religion barred them from in their home countries. However, in 1940, they found themselves once again fleeing from persecution, this time at the hands of the fledgling Vichy regime in France. The couple, with their daughter Claire, were among a group that eventually found precarious shelter in a village in the Ardèche, Saint-Boniface, taking advantage of the region's reputation as a land of refuge, which has seen it for generations taking in religious exiles amongst its folded hills and isolated farmsteads. Come the end of the war, the Garas published a thinly concealed account of their time as refugees. The village of Saint-Boniface itself takes center stage at a meeting of worlds which creates scenes by turn tragic and comic. The intellectual, artistic, and working classes, fleeing from the cities, clash with the rural population, and the resulting human stories, recounted with humor, satire, and pathos, lay bare the powers and the limitations of both groups.

This is the first book-length empirical study of free zones (FZs) in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The volume systematically illustrates the development processes behind FZs in Gulf Arab states and assesses the impact of these commercial entities on regional integration, global trade and investment trends, and the Gulf’s foreign relations. In the process, the work maps how economic strategies involving FZs evolve alongside varying levels of resource availability and state capacity on a local level while also revealing how development paths in Gulf Arab states are linked to regional and global accumulation circuits. FZ development is an under-examined topic in the wider literature on the Gulf. The empirical findings and theoretical implications of the work therefore offer an original contribution to prevailing political economy discussions concerning the Gulf region.

Between 1965 and 1975, thousands of American migrants traded their established lives for a new beginning in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. Some were non-violent resisters who opposed the war in Vietnam. But a larger group was inspired by the ideals of the 1960s counterculture and, hoping to flee the restrictive demands of their parents' world, they set out to build a peaceful, egalitarian society in the Canadian wilderness. Even today, their success is evident, as these impassioned ideals still define community life. Welcome to Resisterville is both a look at an untold chapter in Canadian history and a compelling story of enduring idealism.
