Theodore H. Stanley, M. D. What's New in, Anesthesiology in 1988 contains the Refresher Course manuscripts of the presentations of the 33rd Annual Postgraduate Course in Anesthesiology which took place at the Marriott Hotel Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, February 19-23, 1988. The chapters reflect new data, ideas and concepts within the general framework of most recent developments in "evaluation and monitoring cardiac function before, during and after surgery," "new anesthetics and their actions on the heart and peripheral vasculature, and other organ systems," "metabolism and elimination of anesthetics and anesthetic adjuvants," and "recent developments in the anesthetic management of patients with congenital heart disease, renal and pulmonary dysfunction, and diabetes insipidus. " In addition, there are chapters on new developments in "obstetrics," "regional anesthesia," and "anesthetic management of the newborn. " The purposes of the textbook are to 1) act as a reference for the anesthesio logists attending the meeting, and,2) serve as a vehicle to bring many of the latest concepts in anesthesiology to others within a short time of the formal presentation. Each chapter is a brief but sharply focused glimpse of the interests in anesthesia expressed at the conference. This book and its chapters should not be considered complete treatises on the subjects addressed but rather attempts to summarize the most salient points. This textbook is the sixth in a continuing series documenting the proceedings of the Postgraduate Course in Salt Lake City.

Trauma is the leading cause of death among people under the age of 40 and it ranks third for all age groups. Still, relatively few clinicians specialize in trauma and training is often obtained through experience. The number of trauma patients is expected to continue to grow as pre-hospital care continues to advance. As well, hospitals increasingly see trauma treatment, which requires no pre-approval, as a good source of revenue. Given these developments, the number of opportunities for specialists trained in trauma, including anesthesiologists and critical care physicians, will expand in the years ahead. This book addresses the need for an up-to-date, comprehensive and clinically focused volume for practitioners and trainees in trauma anesthesia and critical care. It is organized by organ system. The editor is an attending physician at a major urban hospital center recognized worldwide for its outstanding emergency medical services including trauma care and is recruiting leading trauma anesthesiologists to contribute. Anesthesiologists, pain medicine physicians, critical care physicians and trainees are the target audience.

Linking existing knowledge to new knowledge by presenting it in the form of a case or a problem is a popular and effective educational approach resulting in better retention of the knowledge and improved ability to apply that knowledge to solve real problems. This problem-based learning (PBL) method was introduced into medical education at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, in 1969. Since then it has been widely incorporated into secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education in a variety of disciplines worldwide. This new volume for the Anesthesiology Problem-Based Learning series reviews topics in general anesthesiology utilizing the PBL approach. Each chapter deals with conditions and problems in anesthesia practice presented as a case stem with questions to encourage critical thinking, followed by an evidence-based discussion and multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. Current in its knowledge of organ systems and management, the text keeps pace with new technology, new drugs, and new surgical techniques coupled with current guidelines for anesthetic management. Cases highlight the practical issues that arise in the operating room and offers solutions for them. The book can be used to review an upcoming clinical case or as a PBL tool. The Stem Case and Key Questions and Discussion sections can serve as the basis for interactive learning experiences for study groups or as a broad yet in-depth clinical review of the specialty for the individual learner. Self-assessment questions can be used as a measure of knowledge acquisition or simply as a question bank to prepare for examinations.

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Therapy, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: This essay will discuss the newly invented technologies in anesthesia. Technological advancement appears to have influenced all aspects of life in the universe leading to remarkable changes in the society. Currently, the world is flooded with new technologies and scientific discoveries and, more are still emerging. This implies that these new technologies and scientific inventions will exert an immense impact on society. However, the wave of technological advancements seems to favor some fields with others experiencing the shock of technology impact. Interestingly, the field of healthcare and medicine are some of the beneficiaries of the newly emerging technologies; hence, medical practice has become relatively sophisticated owing to advanced delivery of care, treatment of chronic diseases and identification of newly emerging diseases and health conditions. It is worth noting that healthcare systems and the scope of medical sciences of the 21st Century are relatively different from the 19th Century versions because the impact of technological developments in the last decade seems to have transformed healthcare delivery systems with some of the newly invented technologies producing extraordinary performances. However, it is worth noting that technological advancement in healthcare and medicine has not only led to the discovery of new drugs but, it has also improved safety and precision in clinical investigations. Moreover, it has led to the emergence of new medical procedures, which have, in turn, improved the quality of care offered to patients by healthcare professionals. For instance, the practice of anesthesia, which is seemingly built on technological advances, appear to have achieved a remarkable progress, especially with regard to the quality of care, owing to a number of technologies developed in the past decade.
