We've all heard the statement (and maybe even said it ourselves), "It's all relative." But are moral truths relative? If that is the case, how then can there be universal human rights? McAndrew's book argues that if there are universal human rights, then moral truths also must be absolute. Society has moved from a worldview that accepted the existence of absolute truth to a world of relative truth. This paradigm shift was primarily motivated by a desire to render philosophy more scientific by eliminating metaphysical theories. But the twentieth century witnessed another shift after the Second World War. Out of that bloody conflict arose the recognition for the need to articulate human rights and hence the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, universal human rights make no sense in a morally relative world. A relative theory of truth is inconsistent with morally condemning acts of others, no matter how heinous. Why It Doesn't Matter What You Believe If it Isn't True challenges those who embrace the "human rights urge" to honestly look at the contradiction between relative truth and universal human rights and examine without prejudice to see where this leads them. This book is a concise and thoughtful call to value absolute moral truth.

John Gibbons presents a new account of epistemic normativity. Belief seems to come with a built-in set of standards or norms—truth and reasonableness, for example—but which one is the fundamental norm of belief? He explains both the norms of knowledge and of truth in terms of the fundamental norm, the one that tells you to be reasonable.

Mudrick Transcribed: Classes and Talks exists only because of the diligence and ingenuity of a student, Lance Kaplan, who recorded some of Marvin Mudrick’s classes on cassette tapes. After Mudrick’s untimely death in 1986, Kaplan began to transcribe and edit the recordings. “Transcribe” and “edit” are, however, inadequate words to describe the creation of this extraordinary book, which is a kind of miracle of attention. It is entertaining, freakishly smart, and full of love—a love of life, books, music, and people. The transcriptions include a class on eighteenth-century English prose, a class on the writing of narrative prose, two interviews about the College of Creative Studies, and talks on literary criticism, artistic response, genius, and the craft of teaching. The only volume that has never been commercially published, this may well be the gem of the Berkshire Classics Mudrick collection.

A tragic, historical novel about people's lives being shaped and destroyed by the interplay between the forces of history and their own passions and limitations. The truth is only the first of the many casualties of war, whether it be World War II, the Spanish Civil War, or the attack on the peaceful protestors of the On to Ottawa Trek by their own government. In present day Toronto, Clare, a grieving widow, finds among her husband's things a confession of murder, signed by a man whose name she's never heard. She resolves to discover the meaning of this note, and whether her straight-laced husband could possibly have been involved. Little does she know that her quest will not only take her to Regina, Vancouver and the west of England, it will unravel much of what she knows to be true in her life, making it clear that she has also been, unknowingly, a casualty of the past. Terrence Heath has created from the materials of powerful political history and equally powerful human emotions, a sweeping novel of dire circumstance and complex characters. Are we all unavoidably casualties of history? Can the first casualty, truth, be revived to provide some measure of eventual freedom?
