Excerpt from Wild Game in Zambezia In the States Of the South African Union, or such Of them as have devoted attention to game preservation, most important results have already been Obtained. Had our efforts in this direction only been made twenty years earlier, we Should have been able to save from extinction at least one interesting form which, years ago, occurred in great numbers. I refer to that singular dun-coloured horse, the quagga. This has gone from among us, completely exter minated, it is said, by the rifles of the South African farmers.1 Only just in time came the existing game restrictions to perpetuate that fascinating form, the black wildebeeste, com paratively few of which remain. A few elephants and buffaloes survive in a state of strict pre servation in the Knysna Forest and in the Addo Bush near Port Elizabeth; but it is, I consider, most unfortunate that more was not done years ago in the Cape Colony and elsewhere to establish refugees for the protection Of such families as the brilliant-coloured bontebok and others which have dwindled to a point dangerously near to complete disappearance. Excerpt from The Giraffe Hunters, Vol. 1 of 3 Let us return to Africa, and encounter new scenes in the company of old friends. On the banks of the Limpopo brightly blazes a hunter's fire, around which the reader may behold three distinct circles of animated beings. The largest is composed of horses, the second of dogs, and the lesser, or inner one, of young men, whom many of my readers will recognize as old acquaintances. I have but to mention the names of Hans and Hendrick Von Bloom, Groot Willem, and Arend Van Wyk, to make known that "The Young Yagers" are again on a hunting expedition. In the one in which we now encounter them, all the parties are not inspired by the same hopes and desires. Excerpt from On Safari: Big Game Hunting in British East Africa, With Studies in Bird-Life Should the title of this work convey no significance, the fact would show that there yet remains Something new from Africa. That Arabic term Safari has no precise equivalent in our British tongue, yet is in daily use throughout British territories six times larger than the home islands. Hence I venture to introduce it to our common language. Its interpretation will presently become clear to those who read this book. Excerpt from The Gorilla Hunters: A Tale of the Wilds of Africa In another moment a quick step was heard on the stair, and a stranger burst into the room, shut the door ln my landlady' 5 face as she followed him, and locked it. I was naturally surprised, though not alarmed, by the abrupt and eccentric conduct of my visitor, who did not condescend to take off his hat, but stood with his arms folded on his breast, gazing at me and breathing hard. You are agitated, sir, pray be seated, said I, pointing to a chair. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Hunter's Life Among Lions, Elephants, and Other Wild Animals of South Africa With regard to my African adventures the following pages must speak for themselves. Let me here state, however, that I Was the first to penetrate into the interior of the Bamangwato country, and that my axe and spade pioneered the way, which others have since followed. I should have pushed still farther but that the great losses I experienced in cattle and horses prevented me from so doing.
