This is a breakthrough book written on an important subject to children, parents, and grandparents. The subject is Dementia, or what is commonly referred to as memory loss. To the best of my knowledge, no other book on this subject has been written specifically for children ages 9 to 12. However, Hudson’s and Charlotte’s endearing adventure is for all readers; children, parents and grandparents. Your children will relate to the adventures of these two young girls, and as they learn about memory loss, so too will you and your children. As people live longer, the population winding up with Dementia is rapidly growing. Parents find themselves ill-equipped to talk to their children about this subject. They themselves know little, and without basic mental health knowledge, parents are unable to discuss this issue with their children. If you have a parent that is fine today, they could start the long, slow, goodbye tomorrow. I believe this book is a must read for all ages, and parents in particular should read it and discuss it with their children. Because this is such an important issue, I am going to donate 10% of my royalties to the Alzheimer Foundation.

Learn how to develop an effective Alzheimer’s ministry. The Guide to Ministering to Alzheimer's Patients and Their Families examines the importance of spirituality in dealing with the everyday challenges of this mysterious disease. Not a “how-to” manual with step-by-step instructions or tried and true formulas, this unique book instead examines the essential elements of ministering to dementia patients based on the first-hand accounts of family members living through pain and uncertainty. The book explores the stages of Alzheimer's, grief and guilt, available resources, and implications of spiritual care for patients and families. It is equally useful as a textbook for graduate and undergraduate work, a reference for study groups and seminars, and a primer for those with limited knowledge of the illness. Ministers sometimes neglect Alzheimer’s patients and their families because they feel they don’t know what to say or do even though they want to be obedient and faithful servants in this specialized ministry. The Guide to Ministering to Alzheimer’s Patients and Their Families communicates the thoughts, feelings, and needs of those affected by the disease to help ministers feel more comfortable, confident, and competent as they develop a theological understanding of God, Alzheimer’s patients, and their role in ministry. The book also provides models for ministry; role-play scenarios; a sample text for a care facility worship service, a care facility memorial service, and a funeral service for a Christian and a non-Christian as well as a sample clergy seminar program on Alzheimer’s ministry. The Guide to Ministering to Alzheimer’s Patients and Their Families examines: common characteristics of early, mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer’s general information about Alzheimer’s ethical decision-making support group ministry respite care religious rites faith issues heredity hospitalization of Alzheimer’s patients long-distance caregiving working with other clergy The Guide to Ministering to Alzheimer’s Patients and Their Families also includes a special appendix of selections from the Scriptures. This book is a unique resource for all Christians who desire to minister to those affected by Alzheimer’s—especially pastors, priests, chaplains, pastoral counselors, church leaders, healthcare professionals, and seminary students.

Overview Remember Me When is written and illustrated by kids and part of Reflections Publishing's "Kids Helping Kids Through Books" series. Remember Me When specifically addresses the emotions that children experience when they are navigating through Alzheimer's disease with a loved one. The fiction stories in this series are written and illustrated from the fresh perspective of kids. With the stories written by child authors, child readers who are going through a difficult time can read these stories and have their feelings validated. By connecting with the children through a fiction story, it simply provides a start for the healing process. Because true healing requires a broad focus on emotional, educational, social, and even spiritual needs, this series also provides a non-fiction section for children (and parents) with the tools they need to navigate through these situations. Specifically, at the back of each book in this series, readers will find commentaries for dealing with difficult situations from experts in various fields (e.g., child psychologists, educators, therapists, and religious scholars). We believe this series will provide children with valuable tools to assist them in dealing with many real-life challenges. Description of Remember Me When: The cruel reality of Alzheimer's disease is that it steals from two groups of people. Individuals suffering from this form of dementia are callously robbed of their minds and memories over time. Just as heartbreaking, though, is the theft of the continued comfort and joy the Alzheimer's patients would have brought to their family members and loved ones as the disease progressively grows worse. Remember Me When is a heartfelt story that provides insight into the terrible crime that is Alzheimer's disease, as told from the perspective of an unlikely collateral victim-a child. Combining a touching story written by 8-year-old Isabelle Ster (whose grandfather, Papa Jerry, suffers from the disease), beautiful imagery from artist Emily Morgan, and expert advice on coping skills and interacting with those who suffer from this disease, Remember Me When will be a cherished resource to families and friends as they journey alongside a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

Dementia is a frightening thing to adults so it is hardly surprising that it's frightening to children. Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia. It may be on a sliding scale of total confusion to just occasional memory lapses. All dementia is not Alzheimer's disease and many people show moderate memory loss without ever being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. This book is not an attempt to define the disease or to suggest a cure or treatment. The goal of this book is to provide a simplistic explanation of general dementia to a primary-age child. Kids are amazingly resilient if they are provided with explanations for confusing things in their lives. My hope is this book will provide children a modicum of illumination on a confusing issue.
