This is an easy-to-read retelling of William Shakespeare's OTHELLO, in which the evil Iago lies and falsely convinces Othello, the Moor (black North African) of Venice, Italy, that his innocent wife, Desdemona, has been cheating on him. Othello remains one of Shakespeare's most contemporary and moving plays, with its emphasis on race, revenge, murder, and lost love. The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is based on the Italian short story Un Capitano Moro (""A Moorish Captain"") by Cinthio, a disciple of Boccaccio, first published in 1565. The work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his new wife, Desdemona; his lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted ensign, Iago.
