This book argues that the drawbacks of wind power far outweigh the advantages. Wind turbines cannot generate enough energy to reduce global CO2 levels to a meaningful degree; what's more, wind power cannot generate a steady output, necessitating back-up coal and gas power plants that significantly negate the saving of greenhouse gas emissions. Energy security, rising energy prices (oil, gas, electricity), 'peak oil', environmental pollution, nuclear energy, climate change and sustainable living are hot topics across the globe. Meanwhile, abundant and perpetual wind resources offer opportunities, via recent technological developments, to provide part of the solution to address these key issues. The rapid growth of large-scale wind farm installations has now led to the generation of clean electricity for tens of millions of homes around the world. However, despite the potential to reduce the losses and costs associated with transmission and to use local wind acceleration techniques to improve energy yields, the potential for urban wind energy has yet to be realised. Although there is increasing public interest, the uptake of urban wind energy in suitable areas has been slow. This is in part due to a lack of understanding of key issues such as: available wind resources; technology integration; planning processes (include assessment of environmental impacts and public safety due to close proximity to people and property); energy consumption in buildings versus energy production from turbines; economics (including grants, subsidies, maintenance); and the effect of complex urban windscapes on performance. Urban Wind Energy attempts to illuminate these areas, addressing common concerns highlighting pitfalls, offering real world examples and providing a framework to assess viability in energy, environmental and economic terms. It is a comprehensive guide to urban wind energy for architects, engineers, planners, developers, investors, policy-makers, manufacturers and students as well as community organisations and home-owners interested in generating their own clean electricity.

Fundamentals of Wind Farm Aerodynamic Layout Design, Volume Four provides readers with effective wind farm design and layout guidance through algorithm optimization, going beyond other references and general approaches in literature. Focusing on interactions of wake models, designers can combine numerical schemes presented in this book which also considers wake models’ effects and problems on layout optimization in order to simulate and enhance wind farm designs. Covering the aerodynamic modeling and simulation of wind farms, the book's authors include experimental tests supporting modeling simulations and tutorials on the simulation of wind turbines. In addition, the book includes a CFD technique designed to be more computationally efficient than currently available techniques, making this book ideal for industrial engineers in the wind industry who need to produce an accurate simulation within limited timeframes. Features novel CFD modeling Offers global case studies for turbine wind farm layouts Includes tutorials on simulation of wind turbine using OpenFoam

“Stability Augmentation of a Grid-connected Wind Farm” introduces a comprehensive approach to stabilizing the power output from wind farms, covering both fixed and variable speed wind turbine generator systems. The book presents the different tools suitable for application in wind farms, together with modeling and control strategies. The book reports on output power and terminal voltage fluctuation minimization, using the integration of energy storage systems with power electronic converters. Transient stability enhancement of the power systems is also discussed. “Stability Augmentation of a Grid-connected Wind Farm” provides advanced tools with detailed modeling and controller design, including extensive simulation results.

A comprehensive guide to wind farm noise prediction, measurement, assessment, control and effects on people Wind Farm Noise covers all aspects associated with the generation, measurement, propagation, regulation and adverse health effects of noise produced by large horizontal-axis wind turbines of the type used in wind farms. The book begins with a brief history of wind turbine development and the regulation of their noise at sensitive receivers. Also included is an introductory chapter on the fundamentals of acoustics relevant to wind turbine noise so that readers are well prepared for understanding later chapters on noise measurements, noise generation mechanisms, noise propagation modelling and the assessment of the noise at surrounding residences. Key features: Potential adverse health effects of wind farm noise are discussed in an objective way. Means for calculating the noise at residences due to a wind farm prior to construction are covered in detail along with uncertainty estimates. The effects of meteorological conditions and other influences, such as obstacles, ground cover and atmospheric absorption, on noise levels at residences are explained. Quantities that should be measured as well as how to best measure them in order to properly characterise wind farm noise are discussed in detail. Noise generation mechanisms and possible means for their control are discussed as well as aspects of wind farm noise that still require further research to be properly understood. The book provides comprehensive coverage of the topic, containing both introductory and advanced level material.

There are a number of books in the market about wind energy, turbine controllers, modelling and different aspects of integration of Wind Farm Power Plants ( WPP) to grids. But none of these books meets the expectations of design and field engineers/technicians to address directly the setting and design philosophy of different Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) of WPP networks. This book provides practical applications of numerical relays for protection and control of different parts of onshore & offshore WPP network namely wind turbine generator, collector feeder and EHV interconnection transmission line to grid. In addition required changes to existing special protection system (SPS) and run-back scheme by adding a new WPP are discussed. The topology and characteristics of WPP networks are different from convectional one for both onshore and offshore WPP. In addition the fault current contribution from wind farm generators are low (1.1-1.2 pu). These causes significant challenge for setting and design of IEDs of WPP in order to meet the common industry practice requirement with respect to reliability, sensitivity, stability, security and grading coordination. The author believes that this book may be unique with respect to addressing these challenges and provision of the mitigation techniques to rectify the deficiencies of existing industry practice which otherwise have not been discussed for real systems in any other book. The content of this book have been successfully applied in the field for various WPPs projects and consequently can be used as a practical guideline for implementation for future projects. The content of the book covers Principal of Operation of WPP , Modelling of different com ponents of WPP, Short Circuit current and voltage characteristics of different type of wind turbine generators, Setting and Design of Protection systems of WPP Network , Design of Control systems of WPP, Lightening and Overvoltage Protection of WPP and Analysis of Disturbance on the WPP networks
