Exile. Persecution. Torture. The riveting story of one man's escape from the Sudan. By the muddy banks of the Kulo-jobi River, a young Sudanese boy is faced with a decision that will shape the rest of his life. William Levi was born in southern Sudan as part of a Messianic Hebrew tribal group and spent the majority of his growing up years as a refugee running from Islamic persecution. He was eventually taken captive for refusing to convert to Islam and suffered greatly at the hands of his captors. After escaping Islamic forces, William eventually came to the United States where he attended college. Since that time, he has been sharing his story nationwide and petitioning members of congress to take action to end the violence in Sudan. His story of deliverance will touch the hearts of believers and raise their awareness to the plight of our Sudanese brothers and sisters in Christ.

New Brunswick’s enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province’s major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support. It sustained them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, including passengers lists and newspaper shipping reports, the book traces the progress of Scottish colonization and its ramification for the province’s early development. The book is the first fully documented account of Scottish emigration to New Brunswick ever to be written. Most Scots came in small groups but there were also great contingents such as the Arran emigrants who settled in Restigouche and the Kincardine emigrants who settled in the Upper St. John Valley. Lowlanders were dispersed fairly widely while Highlanders became concentrated in particular areas like Miramichi Bay. What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, author Lucille H. Campey offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy which they left behind. With axe and bible Scots overcame great hardship and peril and through their efforts created many of the province’s most enduring pioneer settlements.

The Axe Laid to the Root, Fred Pruitt’s second book, immediately plumbs to the final depths of personal spirituality in Christ. Though it seems to start as a simple exposition of scripture and a reiteration of basic Christian theology, it soon becomes far more than that. The book develops into a profound spiritual tome, evoking not only an expansion of our conceptual understanding of salvation through Jesus Christ and the Cross, but even more so hits a central nerve in each of us, by putting into words the realities of every believer’s deep inner spiritual struggles, articulating the unspoken groans of the Holy Spirit in us. This is NOT a “how-to” book. Nor is it a book that calls for rededication or redoubling our efforts. Those subjects are about the work of man. It is instead a book about losing everything and finding all. It is about the work which GOD does in us. It is about recognizing God as the Doer, the Instigator, and the One Who brings all these things to pass – in us! One reader wrote the following, which describes The Axe Laid to the Root to a “t.” “You've done an amazing thing there: summarized the ONE and single Bible theme into just a few pages. [It is] the whole shebang ... Father's salvation intent from beginning to end. Wow: the message now so simple but oh, so hard-earned for us all down our 2000 year history. So many dead ends and blind alleys … have been suffered on the way to this single-eye vision.”

In just a few short years, massive shifts in public opinion have radically reshaped society’s views on homosexuality. Feeling the pressure to forsake long-held beliefs about sex and marriage, some argue that Christians have historically misunderstood the Bible’s teaching on this issue. But does this approach do justice to what the Bible really teaches about homosexuality? In this timely book, award-winning author Kevin DeYoung challenges each of us—the skeptic, the seeker, the certain, and the confused—to take a humble look at God’s Word. Examining key biblical passages in both the Old and New Testaments and the Bible’s overarching teaching regarding sexuality, DeYoung responds to popular objections raised by Christians and non-Christians alike—offering readers an indispensable resource for thinking through one of the most pressing issues of our day.
