Rathakrishnan is working as Reader in the Department of Rural Industries and Management at Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram. He has a distinct and outstanding academic record. The author had his Ph.D. from Pondicherry University and doing research and teaching in the area of Rural Industries and Management, Resource and Environmental Economics and Women Empowerment. He had an opportunity to associate with French Institute of Pondicherry, as an economist, for two years and submitted an independent research report on Forest Based Industries in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. On top of it, the author had visited the London School of Economics and Political Science, U.K. and completed his Post Doctoral Research (PDR) programme successfully. He had published more than 40 research articles and one book (in French). He had attended and presented 30 research papers in National and International conferences, seminars, and workshops. The Indian Constitution is the largest written constitution that guarantees equality to women and empowers the State to take affirmative actions in favour of women. India has adopted International conventions for protection of rights of women and granting them equality and ratified the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in the year 1993. The National Policy for Women Empowerment was presented in 2001, the goal of that policy to bring about the advancement, development and empowerment of women and enable women to become financially independent. Currently, India is the only country where the economic gender gap is larger than the political gender gap. Women are required to understand their own potential and overcome social barriers. With constant support of the government, change in stereotype mindset and skill development in women, India will continue witnessing gradual increase in women entrepreneurship in future. This book offers a critical perspective on the issues related to women’s empowerment, microfinance, and entrepreneurship in India. Written by distinguishing experts in this field, this book highlights women’s empowerment, which is a process of entrusting power to an individual on the control over resources and decisions. However, these two factors are less effective in a society where religion and cultural dominance is high. The book sheds light on the social security measures undertaken by the government aiming to the right to work helped women who are bounded by social restrictions. Over time there is a shift in rural occupational structure towards non-farm activities, which is largely distress driven self-employment. Access to credit is a great source to provide self-employment that develops self-esteem among women and uplift their position. The book highlights the discrimination against women entrepreneurs in access to credit led to gender biased entrepreneurial society. Association with self-help groups (SHGs) has made women more socially empowered. SHG members help them to change their life in a positive manner through micro-entrepreneurial activities. It is observed that for second generation borrowers, the impact of microfinance seems to fizzle out, where MFIs who are gaining efficiency are diverting their objective of servicing poor, signalling a sign of mission drift.
