Working With Children In Contemporary Performance

This book outlines how an innovative ‘rights-based’ model of contemporary performance practice can be used when working with children and young people. This model, framed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), challenges the idea of children as vulnerable and in need of protection, argues for the recognition of the child’s voice, and champions the creativity of children in performance. Sarah Austin draws on rich research and practitioner experience to analyse Youth Arts pedagogies, inclusive theatre practice, models of participation, the symbolic potential of the child in performance, and the work of contemporary theatre practitioners making work with children for adult audiences. The combined practical and written research reflected in this book offers a new, nuanced understanding of children as cultural agents, raising the prospect of a creative process that foregrounds deeper considerations of the strengths and capacities of children. This book considers the state of contemporary theatre education in Great Britain is in two parts. The first half considers the national identities of each of the three mainland nations of England, Scotland, and Wales to understand how these differing identities are reflected and refracted through culture, theatre education and creative learning. The second half attends to 21st century theatre education, proposing a more explicit correlation between contemporary theatre and theatre education. It considers how theatre education in the country has arrived at its current state and why it is often marginalised in national discourse. Attention is given to some of the most significant developments in contemporary theatre education across the three nations, reflecting on how such practice is informed by and offers a challenge to conceptions of place and nation. Drawing upon the latest research and strategic thinking in culture and the arts, and providing over thirty interviews and practitioner case studies, this book is infused with a rigorous and detailed analysis of theatre education, and illuminated by the voices and perspectives of innovative theatre practitioners.

This publication is the outcome of the third International Theatre for Young Audiences Research (ITYARN) conference in conjunction with an ASSITEJ World Congress and Festival held in Warsaw, Poland in 2014. The ITYARN conferences' themes always give a very broad frame to invite researchers from different countries and with diverse Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) traditions as well as diverse academic cultures to contribute to an international exchange about TYA. While exiting, this exchange is always a challenge. How to talk about aesthetic experiences and concepts of childhood in an intercultural dialogue? This is not just a question of translation but also of culturally determined concepts of TYA. Last but not least are the academic attitudes and modes of (critical) discussion themselves, which are culturally informed and shaped by individual experiences. With this publication, ITYARN once again takes up this most interesting task of developing intercultural exchange about TYA. It offers space for a diversity of author contributions, and it invites readers with academic and/ or artistic backgrounds to look for new inspirations for his or her reflections on TYA.

We live in an "adultitarian" state, where the rules are based on very adult priorities and understandings of reality. Young people are disenfranchised and powerless; they understand they're subject to an authoritarian regime, whether they buy into it or not. But their unique perspectives also offer incredible potential for engagement and innovation.
