Workshop Practice In Early Netherlandish Painting

Recent technical examinations of Early Netherlandish art have propelled in-depth studies of key works far beyond traditional connoisseurship methods. Ingenious new applications, as well as a prodigious amount of comparative technical documentation, have changed our views of standard workshop practices, including issues of materials and techniques, and details about the precise nature of collaboration. The studies presented in this book illustrate the variety of approaches and findings in what can be called the new connoisseurship. Here the reader will find alternative methods of evaluating Jan van Eyck's Saint Barbara and Ghent Altarpiece, Dirk Bouts's canvas paintings, Jacb Cornelisz van Oostsanen's Berlin Sketchbook, the Evora Altarpiece and the Saint Anne Altarpiece from Gerard David's workshop, Jan Gossart's Malvagna Triptych, and a triptych by Pieter I Claeissens. These individual studies will be of interest not only to aficionados of Early Netherlandish painting, but also to students who are keen to learn about the pivotal role of technical studies for this period of art history.

The nine papers collected in this publication- which comprises the third and latest edition to the symposium volumes by the Metropolitan Museum of Art - were first presented in conjunction with the Museum's exhibition of Early Netherlandish painting culled from its own holdings in 1998. The essays, by an international roster of leading specialists, together uncover the circumstances underlying the creation of works of art and shed new light on their meaning, in the context of the growing interdisciplinary activity and burgeoning scholarship in the field. The importance of archival research into the socio-economic factors that existed in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries is emphasized- especially, the impact of art markets on the production of paintings as well as sculpture. The volume contains entries for paintings in the National gallery that were produced in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by artists from the Netherlands. The entries are arranged alphabetically by artist; a short biography and bibliography for each artist is followed by individual entries on the paintings, each in order of acquisition. The authors address traditional questions of attributes and iconography; in addition, they examine the social, economic, and religious context in which the individual work of art functioned. The volume is also probable the first museum catalogue to include the results of examination by infrared reflectography and dendrochronological analysis.

In Anonymous Art at Auction, Anne-Sophie V. Radermecker takes the opposing view of the superstar economy by examining contemporary sales of Early Flemish paintings with unknown authorship and the effects of various substitutes for real names on price formation.

Ces Actes du Colloque XV pour l'etude du dessin sous-jacent et de la technologie dans la peinture (Bruges, 11-13 septembre 2003), reunissent trente-six etudes traitant d'oeuvres d'art flamand, espagnol, portugais, italien et francais. Ces etudes sont suivies, comme dans les Actes precedents, d'une bibliographie de l'infrarouge.Depuis de nombreuses annees on sait que la peinture ancienne est constituee - outre d'oeuvres dites "originales" - de copies, de repliques et de pastiches, produites dans des ateliers actifs qui faisaient appel a des collaborations. Les bases sur lesquelles on avait fonde jadis les catalogues des maitres sont ebranlees. De nombreuses attributions doivent etre revues. Les auteurs du present volume ont porte leur effort dans ce sens, examinant d'un oeil critique le statut des peintures et les indices qui permettent de reconnaitre l'original de la copie. Certains auteurs traitent de procedes de copies, de l'usage de cartons, modeles et papiers perfores, mais egalement de couleurs, d'encres, d'enduits, de technique picturale ... D'autres auteurs tentent de preciser le nombre de collaborateurs dans les ateliers. D'autres encore s'interessent a une methode d'examen, comme la radiographie, pour l'exploiter afin de distinguer au mieux la main du maitre de celle du copiste.
