Excerpt from Writing for Television and Radio The Mass Media of television and radio are closely related in the development and practice of writing techniques. Indeed, it is usual for television and radio writing to be combined in one course in most colleges and universities. For a number of years good texts and resource books have been available on television writing alone and on radio writing alone. In addition, there are several fine works oriented primarily toward dramatic writing. From the practical point of view, however, relatively few opportunities exist today for the serious television or radio playwright. The jobs available for television and radio writers are most frequently found among the program types which exist on local as well as network levels, including news, sports, talks programs of various kinds, panel-games-audience participation shows, women's and children's programs, music and variety shows, special features and, sometimes, documentaries. Extremely important is the writing of announcements and commercials. Those who wish to write for the mass media, the playwright included, can benefit from a knowledge of the non-dramatic areas. Over a number of years of teaching television and radio writing, I was unable to find a text devoted predominantly to the above "bread-and-butter" aspects of the two media. Consequently, I developed my own teaching materials which, after several years of testing and revision, now make up this book. My purpose is not to slight the play, which I believe to be highest form of writing (about one-fifth of this book is devoted to dramatic writing). My primary aim, however, is to make available to all who are concerned with broadcast writing that which was heretofore unavailable: a book devoted principally to the non-dramatic forms of both television and radio. By concentrating on the practical elements needed to prepare one for a writing job, and on the areas of writing that comprise most of current broadcast fare, I hope that this book may serve as a single, comprehensive work for all who wish to learn some of the basic principles and techniques of the craft, and as a useful reference source for professional writers. Writing for the Fashion Business is an exciting and engaging textbook that presents effective writing techniques geared specifically for the fashion industry. This text fills the gap between general writing classes and upper-level fashion courses that address writing for specific sectors of the fashion business, such as merchandising or promotion. Real-world examples, case studies, and industry profiles provide models of the challenges of writing for the fashion industry and discuss issues of form and content. Students have ample opportunity to practice writing and critical thinking skills as they complete the portfolio exercises within each chapter and respond to the questions at the end of each case study. Chapter summaries and lists of key terms help them retain chapter content.

The globalization and saturation of local markets lead to increased international activities of companies. In this context marketers are forced to advertise globally and to decide between standardization and differentiation of their advertisements, i.e. to either use one single idea all over the world or to make adaptations for local preferences. Besides knowing the pros and cons of these approaches, it is essential that advertisers are familiar with different cultures. Otherwise the advertisement runs the risk of being misunderstood or in the worst case to offend cultural fundamentals. In her book Mirjana Milenkovic examines the specifics of different national cultures and their implications for global advertising. Describing the various local restrictions and obstacles international advertisers have to deal with, the challenge of global advertising becomes clear. The perception of advertising is greatly influenced by the respective culture and its members' understanding of reality. On the basis of Hofstede's Five Dimensions, cultures and their characteristics are described. The reader learns about the behavior in different cultures and how cultural backgrounds impact buying decisions. With numerous practical illustrations Global Advertising in a Cultural Context gives an insight into the specifics of worldwide advertising and the challenge of both approaches in strategy and execution in front of the cultural background. This book gives recommendations for successful global advertising on the basis of six different advertising approaches and their suitability to overcome cultural differences.

A significant expansion of the critically acclaimed first edition, Classics Illustrated: A Cultural History, 2d ed., carries the story of the Kanter family's series of comics-style adaptations of literary masterpieces from 1941 into the 21st century. This book features additional material on the 70-year history of Classics Illustrated and the careers and contributions of such artists as Alex A. Blum, Lou Cameron, George Evans, Henry C. Kiefer, Gray Morrow, Rudolph Palais, and Louis Zansky. New chapters cover the recent Jack Lake and Papercutz revivals of the series, the evolution of Classics collecting, and the unsung role of William Kanter in advancing the fortunes of his father Albert's worldwide enterprise. Enhancing the lively account of the growth of "the World's Finest Juvenile Publication" are new interviews and correspondence with editor Helene Lecar, publicist Eleanor Lidofsky, artist Mort Kunstler, and the founder's grandson John "Buzz" Kanter. Detailed appendices provide artist attributions, issue contents and, for the principal Classics Illustrated-related series, a listing of each printing identified by month, year, and highest reorder number. New U.S., Canadian and British series have been added. More than 300 illustrations--most of them new to this edition--include photographs of artists and production staff, comic-book covers and interiors, and a substantial number of original cover paintings and line drawings.
