Yasargil Microneurosurgery Study Guide is designed for effective learning and study of the neurosurgical principles contained in seminal microneurosurgery textbooks. From normal microsurgical anatomy to aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and CNS tumor microsurgery, this study guide provides a question-and-answer format to knowledge of the background, anatomy, and techniques of microneurosurgery. This work is a practical guide to the application of microneurosurgery to a variety of brain conditions, including intracranial aneurysms, extrinsic and intrinsic tumors, while providing guidance on instrumentation and equipment, neuroanesthesia, complications, and more. This practical book is ideal for neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroanatomists, and other technical experts with a clinical interest in brain microsurgery. Provides a fill-in the blanks format structure of question and answers to test microneurosurgery learning Discusses pathology, physiology, imaging and treatment protocols in neurosurgery Details acronyms to help provide memory cues Allows readers to test their knowledge of neurosurgical anatomy, techniques, equipment, and more Ideal for both neurosurgeons, neurosurgical residents, and others working in the field of microneurosurgery

Microsurgery Applied to Neurosurgery focuses on microsurgical approaches to cerebrospinal lesions, including plastic surgery, suturing techniques, instruments for microsurgery, and microsurgical operations. The manuscript first offers information on the history of microsurgery and the operating microscope. Discussions focus on bipolar electric coagulation, plastic surgery, peripheral nerves, clinical application, binocular diploscope, automatic microscope stand, sterile covering of the microscope, and magnification. The text also elaborates on the instruments for microsurgery and suturing techniques. The publication takes a look at experimental microsurgical operations in animals and reconstructive and constructive surgery of the cerebral arteries in man. The manuscript also ponders on intracranial tumors and transnasal-transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary gland. Topics include transsphenoidal approach, suboccipital transmeatal approach, spinal tumors, and preoperative radiological study. The manuscript is a dependable reference for health professionals and readers interested in microsurgery.

M. Gazi Yasargil: Father of Modern Neurosurgery describes Professor Yasargil developing a means of reducing the mortality rates associated with the deadliest of brain pathologies from thirty percent in the mid-1960s to less than two percent. It required not only a vastly redesigned microscope, but an array of new surgical instruments, even a new way of thinking. 1967 witnessed neurosurgeons flocking to Zurich from around the world to learn his method. Yasargil possessed a truly amazing surgical talent, but his brand of microneurosurgery allowed even the lesser skilled to achieve stunning results if the requisite laboratory-hours to master the method were observed. Yasargil's life and times were as dramatic and challenging as microneurosurgery was important. He was born in a cave in rural east Turkey as his parents were held at gunpoint by outlaws determined to challenge the new government in Ankara. At eighteen, with his family's hearts in their throats, he was off to Vienna to study medicine. But when Nazi police suspected him of being a Jew, he was not allowed to register for classes. But instead of returning to Turkey defeated, he chose to push into Germany where he bargained enrollment as a first year medical student. From 1943 to 1945 he was harassed by Hitler's police as a potential spy. Headstrong, confident-he typically made matters worse. The bombs killing some of his classmates were dropped from British and American aircraft. Since this story contains as much history and adventure as medical triumph, a brief glossary of medical terms make it accessible to anyone reading at the high school level.

Professor Yasargil exemplifies the 'operative neurosurgeon' in whom a brilliant mind and a developed soul guide gifted hands... - Ossama Al-Mefty, M.D. Thieme is proud to present this reprint of M. G. Yasargil's seminal work in Microneurosurgery. Professor Yasargil began his neurosurgical residency at the University of Zurich more than 50 years ago. During the course of his remarkable career, he was instrumental in developing and refining many of the tools and techniques that even today remain indispensable gold standards in treatment. In 1999 the journal Neurosurgery honored him as Neurosurgery's Man of the Century 1950-1999. Professor Yasargil's lifetime achievements include: Integration of angiography and microsurgical techniques Development and application of innovative instrumentation, including the floating microscope, the self-retaining adjustable retractor, and ergonomic aneurysm clips and appliers Professor Yasargil's genius in developing microsurgical techniques for use in cerebrovascular neurosurgery has transformed the outcomes of patients with conditions that were previously inoperable. In this volume, you will witness the establishment of a major plateau in the evolution of modern neurosurgery. Original copyright year: 1969
