Zen Beyond All Words contains a selection of talks given by Zen Master Wolfgang Kopp. In the spirit of the ancient Chinese Zen Cha'an masters, Wolfgang Kopp teaches a direct and powerful Zen Buddhism. He conveys neither a theoretical system nor a one-sided dogmatism of sitting. Rather, Master Kopp speaks directly to the reader, free of incumbencies. His sole aim is our liberation from old patterns of behavior and modes of thought, leading ultimately to the enlightenment of the Mind. He uses all means to awaken the reader out of the slumber of habit, because habit, regardless of its form, hinders us from experiencing reality directly. Master Kopp's energy-packed words of shocking openness are filled with such spiritual power that they can strike us like a flash of lightning, shattering the logic of our conceptual thinking. On every page of this Zen. book he shows us the mirror of our true being and in it we recognize our ever-present Buddha-nature.

A profound wisdom which transforms and liberates In this book we feel the absolute directness and freedom of Zen. With clear words that expose each illusion, Zen Master Zensho captures the essence in a nutshell. He shows us the mirror of our true being, and in it we recognise our constantly present buddha-nature, our original, true self. His clear words are filled with such spiritual force that they touch us at our very deepest. Here, the logic of our conceptual, discriminating thinking is often profoundly shaken so that we can grasp the truth beyond all words. In a clear and lively way, Zensho shows us a direct path to spiritual realisation and, by means of authentic Zen-anecdotes and quotes, he brings to life the old masters of Zen. With Zenistic consistency, everything is swept away so that we are able to reach liberation of the mind beyond our limited intellectual logic and can experience the state of pure awareness. Special to this book are Master Zensho's 50 expressive drawings, which breathe the Zen mind. A book which imparts the fundamentals of Zen-Buddhism.

Spiritual practice is not some kind of striving to produce enlightenment, but an expression of the enlightenment already inherent in all things: Such is the Zen teaching of Dogen Zenji (1200–1253) whose profound writings have been studied and revered for more than seven hundred years, influencing practitioners far beyond his native Japan and the Soto school he is credited with founding. In focusing on Dogen's most practical words of instruction and encouragement for Zen students, this new collection highlights the timelessness of his teaching and shows it to be as applicable to anyone today as it was in the great teacher's own time. Selections include Dogen's famous meditation instructions; his advice on the practice of zazen, or sitting meditation; guidelines for community life; and some of his most inspirational talks. Also included are a bibliography and an extensive glossary.

This Winter 2009 (VII, 1) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self- Knowledge, entitled “Teaching Transformations 2009” and dedicated to the chronicling of representative experiences of teaching transformation in the New England area and elsewhere, brings together selected proceedings of the annual conferences of the Center for the Improvement of Teaching (CIT) and the New England Center for Inclusive Teaching (NECIT) recently held at UMass Boston. The first seven studies in the issue were gathered through the conference activities of NECIT. The second series of articles emerged from the conversations and presentations at the annual CIT conference at UMass Boston. The contributions have a common interest in advancing teaching and learning practices that transform the self and the world in favor of more just, inclusive, and participatory outcomes. The editors believe that the most central and distinguishing defining features of NECIT and CIT, i.e., the three-fold concerns with promoting pedagogical reflexivity, student learning empathy, and faculty agency, are well advocated for and respresented in the papers shared in this volume. Contributors include: Jay R. Dee (also as journal issue guest editor), Vivian Zamel (also as journal issue guest editor), Cheryl J. Daly, Maria Natalicia Rocha-Tracy, Darlene Ferguson-Russell, John Fobanjong, Patricia White, LeeAnn Griggs, Sally Barney, Janet Brown-Sederberg, Elizabeth Collins, Susan Keith, Lisa Iannacci, Kimberly Smirles, Ann Wetherilt, Melanie Murphy, Elijah Patterson, Janet D. Johnson, Elizabeth H. Rowell, Mary Ball Howkins, Duane Wright, Wayne-Daniel Berard, Alexandria Hallam, Anne Geiwitz, Matthew R. Apophatic theology, or negative theology, attempts to describe God, the Divine Good, by negation, to speak only in terms of what may not be said about the perfect goodness that is God. It is a way of coming to an understanding of who God is, which has played a significant role across centuries of Christian tradition but is very often treated with suspicion by those engaging in theological study today. This book seeks to introduce students to this oft-misunderstood form of spirituality. Beginning by placing apophatic spirituality within its biblical roots, the book later considers the key pioneers of apophatic faith and a diverse range of thinkers, including C. S. Lewis and Keats, to inform us in our negative theological journey. A final section explores what difference a negative theological approach might make to our practice and our liturgy.
