This book examines the figure of the public intellectual through the work of Émile Zola in the Dreyfus affair. A cryptic killer is cruising the streets of Johannesburg. Emile Zola is a towering literary figure of the nineteenth century. His main literary achievement was his twenty-volume novel cycle, Les Rougon-Macquart (1870–93).
