Excerpt from A History of Moray and Nairn In its endeavour to tell the story of the old province of Moray with accuracy, and at the same time in popular language, the present volume follows strictly in the lines of the previous volumes of the series. But it differs from its predecessors in the arrangement adopted. It appeared to the writer that by treating the Province, the Bishopric, the Earldom, &c., as separate subjects, he would be able to lay before the reader a more sharply defined picture of their nature, progress, and influence than if he had employed the more ordinary narrative form. He is far from maintaining that such an arrangement is in all instances the best. But in the case of Moray and Nairn the sequence of events seemed to lend itself to this disposition - the historical importance and interest of the one having, roughly speaking, ceased, or at least begun to wane, before those of the other waxed. Excerpt from The History of the Province of Moray, Vol. 1 of 3: Comprising the Counties of Elgin and Nairn, the Greater Part of the County of Inverness, and a Portion of the County of Banff I have said it was the misfortune Of the north ern countries that the Romans were so little acquainted with them; for wherever they settled they softened the rough temper and civilised the rude manners Of the natives. They introduced letters, arts, and sciences. They taught agricul ture, and laid the foundations Of cities and towns, navigation and commerce. Hence the many towns and villages on both sides of the Frith of Forth had their rise from the Roman colonies, forts, and naval stations. And the foundation Of the culture and fertility Of the Lothians was laid by their industry; while the western coast, from the Clyde northward, into which the Romans never entered (though better furnished by nature with bays, harbours, and creeks), remained long uncivilised, without towns, trade, or commerce. Excerpt from The Covenanters in Moray and Ross IN response to a request conveyed to me at a public meeting held in Nairn to welcome me back, after an absence of sixteen years, to the scene of my former labours, I have agreed to issue a Second Edition of these Lectures which have been now for several years out of print, but are still inquired for in the North of Scotland. I should have liked to have re-written them, adding a supplementary chapter on the Religious History of Moray since the Revolution, but my visit to Europe, undertaken for purpose of health, being limited, I must content myself with a few corrections and the addition of an explanatory note or two. For the same reason, I must leave the correction of the press to the publishers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Moray and Nairn: With Maps, Diagrams and Illustrations The word shire is of Old English origin, and meant charge, administration. The Norman Conquest intro duced an alternative designation, the word county - through Old French from Latin comitatus, which in mediaeval documents stands for shire. County denotes the district under a count, the king's comes, the equivalent of the older English term earl. This system of local administration entered Scotland as part of the anglo-norman influence that strongly affected our country after 1100. Our shires dii'fer in origin, and have arisen from a combination of causes - geographical, political and ecclesiastical. The boundaries, though often perplexing, have in the main been determined by the geographical features. Such is the case with Moray.
