Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for Beginners in Chemical Analysis The formulae made use of in this work to describe compounds, are molecular formulae; that is, they express the weight which, in the gaseous state, they have, referred to H, volume for volume, this is not the place to describe the methods by which the molecular volumes of volatile and nonvolatile bodies have been determined. The molecule we believe to be composed of atoms having the smallest proportion, by weight, of the element which can enter into combination. The atoms unite with one another to form molecules, in which their affinities are mutually satisfied: the measure of affinity is different for different atoms: the elements differ in quantivalency or atomicity. The measure of the atom of hydrogen, H, is selected as a basis; it is univalent, and is, as it were, a point of departure for other atoms. The metalloids are called univalent, bivalent, trivalent, etc., according as an atom is able to unite with, or replace, one, two or three atoms of hydrogen. The quantivalency of the metals depends upon the number of hydrogen atoms which the metal-atom can replace. Probably every atom has a fixed capacity for saturation a fixed chemical value. Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide in Qualitative Chemical Analysis The method of instruction presented in this little book has been developed by the author in teaching the subject during the past fourteen years. The course differs materially from those usually employed, and has given satisfaction because of its tendency to obviate thoughtless and mechanical work on the part of the student - facts which may be offered as an excuse for adding another to the great number of works on qualitative analysis. The general plan of Part I, which is applied wherever it would not be too cumbersome, consists in giving directions for analyses without mentioning the results, and in requiring the student to determine for himself the results of the operations. Following this system, the student almost invariably performs his preliminary experiments with great care, because he recognizes their object and importance. This is especially the case if the student understands that, in the analysis of unknown mixtures, he will not be allowed to use any tables or abbreviated schemes of analysis. Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Qualitative analysis is of use to the pharmacist in testing chemicals for identity and purity. The study of the subject is also Of value because Of the practical knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes acquired by the student, and because it gives training in careful observation and develops the reasoning powers as they are exercised in the interpretation of results. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further.
