Jerry Herman is one of Broadway's most celebrated composers and lyricists. He is the author of two of the biggest successes in musical theater history: Hello, Dolly! and Mame . Herman is also responsible for Mack and Mabel, Milk and Honey , and the musical version of the film La Cage Aux Folles. All of these have been produced many times, in both professional and amateur productions around the world. Herman Melville's reputation as a great writer has gradually evolved throughout the 20th century. Tempered by studies that emphasize the Western literary tradition, literary appreciation for Melville's use of folklore has been slow in developing. This study focuses on Melville's immersion with and borrowing from oral traditions: both music and narrative; tall-tale humour; nautical folklore; superstition; and legend. The book also acts as a general introduction to Melville's work.

The 1940s saw a brief audacious experiment in mass entertainment: a jukebox with a screen. Patrons could insert a dime, then listen to and watch such popular entertainers as Nat "King" Cole, Gene Krupa, Cab Calloway or Les Paul. A number of companies offered these tuneful delights, but the most successful was the Mills Novelty Company and its three-minute musical shorts called Soundies.
