Not illustrated. 1823 edition. Excerpt: ... After its alienation from the crown, the earls of Warren are the first subjects in ral survey, we learn that, "in the time of the Confessor, this manor was part of the royal firm of Edith his Queen, who was probably permitted to hold in her dower till the time of her decease, in December, 1074. At this time it was rated at one thousand and fifty acres of land. At the time of the survey, when the Conqueror was found in possession, it was not rated to the land-tax at all. The arable land is said to be fourteen hundred acres, the meadow no more than three: but woeds on the manor were sufficient to maintain five hundred swine upon the mash and acorns in pasnage time, and three hundred and eighty upon the grass in time of herbage; for they yielded to the lord a rent offifty of the fed of that stock, and thirty-eight of the lean. Here were also three mills, and four villans in grass." "The demesne, or manor, properly so called, consisted of sixteen hundred acres; whereof two hundred were occupied by the King himself, and the remaining fourteen hundred by his tenants at will, which were thirty-eight villans and thirteen boarders." The family of Warren probably had this manor at some very early period, although we find no mention made of it among their estates, as enumerated by Dugdale and others, till the time of the first John Earl of Warren and Surrey, in the reign of Henry m. "An inquisition was taken at Dorkyng before J. de Lovelot, one of the justices assigned for that purpose, on Sunday next after the feast of St. Matthew the apostle, in the 4th year of King Edward I., by a jury sworn to certify to the whose hands it is found. From that family it descended to the Fitz-Alans, earls of Arundel; and on the decease of King, the value of the...

This volume brings together for the first time all the known poems of English writer Anna Letitia Barbauld (1743-1825), a once esteemed but long neglected figure whose career spanned the Age of Sensibility and the Romantic Era. William McCarthy and Elizabeth Kraft have collected 170 of her poems, including twenty-three previously unpublished and eleven conjectural attributions. This is the first scholarly edition of any writings of Barbauld, a brilliant woman whose interests ranged from literary criticism to history and affairs of state to children’s stories. At the end of the eighteenth century, Barbauld may well have been the most eminent living poet, male or female, in Britain. Barbauld belongs almost equally to two generations. Her verse displays an eighteenth-century adherence to balance, common sense, and poetic diction and meter, but it also celebrates the individual, the passionate, and the fanciful in a clearly Romantic manner. In the current reconfiguring of Romanticism, Barbauld provides an important contrast to the major male poets who have, until recently, defined the era--poets who clearly acknowledged her influence on their own work, yet who played a role in Barbauld’s lapse into obscurity in the century after her death. Coleridge, before a serious falling out with Barbauld, admired her greatly, and Wordsworth confessed that he wished the final eight lines of her poem “Life” had been of his own composing. Walter Savage Landor ranked her “Summer Evening’s Meditation” among the finest poems in the English language. Barbauld’s poems have retained their capacity to delight readers; they are witty, learned, imaginative, and unpredictable in both choice and treatment of subject. Read as a whole, this collection reveals a striking variety of style and voice and provides the basis for a major--and long overdue--reevaluation of Barbauld’s poetry. McCarthy and Kraft present unmodernized texts of the poems that reflect as nearly as possible the author’s final intention and give variant readings in textual notes. A lengthy introduction includes a discussion of the poems, a history of their composition and publication, and an outline of Barbauld’s life and writing career.

An almost universal concern of the Victorian governing classes was with the question of social control: how to deflect a largely uneducated working class from their inevitable challenge to the centres of power, accepted value systems and existing authority structures. The fear in which the masses were held by the middle and upper classes came to dominate access to education or, more accurately, to what they defined as "useful knowledge," since this was designed to instil the values of a just and ordered society. Conversely for the working class, it would give them power; power over their own lives and in so-doing provide access to that social hierarchy currently valued by the governing minority. This book addresses the role of the providers of education alongside the responses of those for whom it was intended. It discusses the provision of educational initiatives and the frequent attenuation of their founding objectives. It assesses the utility of the strategies of power and control adopted by the providers in order to maintain an upper class ideology. Though evidence is discussed in a national context, it is supported by additional data from a rural county both for the purpose of comparative analysis and in order to add character and hear the true voice of the men and women involved.
