During the last decade, logistics outsourcing is growing in importance worldwide. Meanwhile, many different kinds of logistics services are also introduced in the outsourcing market. However, up to now, there are no guidelines for the food processing industry to identify which logistics activities should be outsourced to which type of logistic service provider (LSP). By combining managerial and economic theory, this book builds an integrated research framework to demonstrate decisive factors for outsourcing different kinds of logistics activities and their effect on logistics performance. Using empirical evidences from the food processing industry in Taiwan and the Netherlands, this study shows that: - outsourcing decisions of different levels of logistics activities have different determining factors. - total outsourcing (i.e. having the LSP orchestrate the whole logistics process) results in higher logistics service performances in terms of lead-time, reliability, and flexibility. - currently the Netherlands have higher percentages of outsourcing of transportation and transportation management than Taiwan. In the future, Taiwan will probably outsource value added activities and logistics orchestration activities more than the Netherlands. This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals and practitioners who concern themselves with the design, planning and management of logistics in international food supply chains.

Is your company saving money by using outside suppliers? Is outsourcing reliable? As a result, is your company gaining a competitive edge? Or would the company do better by keeping some of the efforts in-house? And how is the performance of outside suppliers and in-house functions measured to facilitate effective sourcing decisions? These are questions the author, a specialist in corporate performance improvement, tackles in this book. The answers are surprising, and the guidance presented will have far-reaching benefits for organizations. He maintains that companies' expectations from outsourcing are not being met, because there is not a methodical approach to measuring and evaluating the performance of sources. By fully assessing the performance of available sources, the best can be selected and the company can benefit long term. Succinctly and comprehensively, Maromonte guides companies step by step through his proprietary techniques for sourcing performance assessment and decision making. His book will be an important, useful resource for senior management and executives, operations managers, finance, purchasing and quality professional, and anyone with responsibility for bottom-line results. To improve competitiveness in the global marketplace, companies are reducing costs through outsourcing—the purchase of goods and services from suppliers. In many cases, outsourcing is less expensive for companies than producing these goods and services internally. Companies, however, do not always achieve their ultimate goal of competing more effectively. This is because decisions to outsource are primarily based on the promise of lower direct costs, without considering other source performance criteria that also impact costs and ultimately competitiveness. Corporate Strategic Business Sourcing guides management in selecting the best sources—those that will raise performance to world-class levels and improve competitiveness. To improve sourcing decisions, the concept of the Strategic Business Unit, or SBU, is applied to each source being considered to provide the company with goods and services. Following the SBU approach, similar product and service lines are grouped together in the corporation. As a result quality levels, delivery performance, customer service, and product advancements, as well as costs, are more easily measured and improved. Just as the focus on these five criteria leads to improved SBU performance, the same approach can be applied to enhance the performance of the individual sources of goods and services. This is accomplished by similarily quantifying and improving the quality, delivery, cost, customer service and product advancement performance of the companies' sources, whether outside suppliers or in-house functions.

This book opens the “black box” of software sourcing by explaining how dynamic software alignment is established and how it impacts business performance outcomes. By investigating how software-sourcing modes are related to value generation in the post-implementation phase, it shows researchers and managers the impact logic of on-demand, on-premises, and in-house software on dynamic fit and process-level performance outcomes in a client organization. It describes dynamic IT alignment as the key to success in a fast-moving digital world with software-as-a-service on the rise and highlights the fact that today companies can choose between developing software in-house (make) or sourcing packaged systems in an on-premises (buy) or an on-demand (lease) mode. This book is the first to explicitly compare these sourcing arrangements with each other in terms of alignment and business performance.

Three years have passed since the second edition of this book was published. The field of IT outsourcing continues to grow in practice as well as in academia and draws further attention in both domains. Aspects of traditional outsourcing (Part II) have remained pronounced but are becoming more mature. While o- sourcing determinants are still important, they are now of less interest to researchers. Relationship management (Chap. 1) and capability management (Chap. 2) continue to be of interest; so too are outsourcing outcomes (Chap. 3) and, as a new focus, innovation aspects (Chap. 4). These are motivating more and more research activities, complementing the lifecycle of traditional o- sourcing. We note significant growth in the field of IT offshoring (Part II). In our third edition, we offer research results on offshoring patterns and trends (Chap. 5), the crucial aspect of knowledge sharing (Chap. 6), vibrant examples for offshoring dynamics (Chap. 7), and some new contributions on the deter- nants of offshoring success (Chap. 8). The last part of our book investigates the field of business process outsourcing (Part III). In this section, issues such as standardization, process outsourcing to India and deinstitutionalization patterns in the health-care sector are presented. Given these new subjects, we believe that Enduring Themes, Global Challenges, and Process Opportunities is an appropriate subtitle for this third edition of the monograph. Again, we have thoughtfully compiled contem- rary outsourcing research as a primer and a platform for scientific discourse.
