A drop of water may be divided and subdivided, until each particle is so small that it can only be seen by the most powerful microscope, but each particle will still be water. Now, imagine the division to be carried on still farther until a limit is reached beyond which it is impossible to go without changing the nature Of the particle. The particle of water is now SO small that, if it be divided again, it will cease to be water, and will be something else; we call this particle a molecule. If a molecule of water be divided, it will yield two atoms of hydrogen gas, and one of oxygen gas. If a molecule Of Sulphuric acid be divided, it will yield two atoms of hydro gen, one of sulphur, and four of oxygen.
