Library-quality hardcover book with dust-jacket. This book is a collection of short stories in Naskapi that features the ""historical account"" traditional Algonquian storytelling genre, tip0/00chimzna (stories). The book features some eyewitness accounts of tragic and exciting events on the land and sea, as well as first-person accounts of the storyteller's own adventures and skill as a hunter and provider. This is the sixth book in a series prepared for reading in Naskapi and in English by the Naskapi Development Corporation. John Peastitute (1896-1981) was a Naskapi Elder who was a well respected as a story-keeper and storyteller. His repertoire of both tip0/00chimzna and 0/00tiyzhkinich was extensive, and his performances engaging. The tape recordings of his stories that have survived to be preserved, processed and studied are a precious legacy. The ""Whale Hunt"" collection is second book in this series of true historical accounts of Naskapi life told by a Naskapi speaker.

After the success of her collection The Woman Who Thought She Was a Planet, Vandana Singh returns to the short story in Ambiguity Machines. Her deep humanism interplays with her scientific background in stories that consider and celebrate this world and others, with characters who try to make sense of the people they meet, what they see, and the challenges they face. An eleventh century poet wakes to find he is an artificially intelligent companion on a starship. A woman of no account has the ability to look into the past. And in ‘Requiem,’ a major new novella, a woman goes to Alaska to try and make sense of her aunt’s disappearance. Examining the revolutionary potential of speculative fiction, Singh dives deep into the vast strangeness of the universe without and within to explore the ways in which we move through space and time: together, yet always apart.

Rosanne Parry, acclaimed author of A Wolf Called Wander and Heart of a Shepherd, shines a light on Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest in the 1920s, a time of critical cultural upheaval. Pearl has always dreamed of hunting whales, just like her father. Of taking to the sea in their eight-man canoe, standing at the prow with a harpoon, and waiting for a whale to lift its barnacle-speckled head as it offers its life for the life of the tribe. But now that can never be. Pearl's father was lost on the last hunt, and the whales hide from the great steam-powered ships carrying harpoon cannons, which harvest not one but dozens of whales from the ocean. With the whales gone, Pearl's people, the Makah, struggle to survive as Pearl searches for ways to preserve their stories and skills.

So back he went to Mulifanua. The boat voyage from Apia down the coast inside the reef is not a long one, but the Samoan crew were frightened to have such a man free; so they tied him hand and foot and then lashed him down tightly under the midship thwart with strips of green fau bark. Not that they did so with unnecessary cruelty, but ex-Lieutenant Schwartzkoff, the foreman, was looking on, and then, besides that, this big-boned, light-skinned man was a foreigner, and a Samoan hates a foreigner of his own colour if he is poor and friendless. And then he was an aitu a devil, and could speak neither Samoan, nor Fijian, nor Tokelau, nor yet any English or German....FROM THE BOOKS.

This is a story about Kachimayichasuw, beings in the Naskapi world view that may remind one of the many stories of gnomes, fairies or leprechauns found in European cultural traditions. Or, possibly the word refers to someone completely different. The story in this book is a tipchimn, or a retelling of an eyewitness account about those sneaking mischief-makers who are said to throw rocks at tents and steal supplies, and are invisible to everyone except the kkusphthk, the 'one who performs the shaking tent ceremony'.
