Achievements Milestones And Challenges In Biomedical And Health Informatics

The technological advances in Biomedical and Health Informatics (BMHI) in the last 4 decades could barely have been imagined when the field was in its infancy. At the time, computers were large and unwieldy, memory was measured in kilobytes, and the Internet was accessible only to people in the technology professions. How the world has changed. The skills of BMHI are now essential for everyone who participates in healthcare, from practitioners and researchers to administrators and patients. This book presents the 17 accepted papers of the International Symposium on Achievements, Milestones, and Challenges in Biomedical and Health Informatics (BMHI), held in Athens, Greece, on 29 October 2022. This event marks the retirement of Professor John Mantas, whose career in BMHI spans over 40 years, and a number of eminent colleagues from around the world were invited to present original review papers in their respective domains, not only to celebrate the work of Professor Mantas, but to review the achievements, milestones, and challenges of BMHI. Most of those presenting papers have worked in the field for decades, and their collective experience and wisdom highlights the accomplishments and limitations of the field. Each paper was peer reviewed by 3 independent reviewers before being thoroughly revised ensuring the high quality of the accepted papers. The book is dedicated to the entire BMHI community. It covers the achievements attained, the milestones reached, and the challenges which have been overcome or which have not been conquered, and provides knowledge and perspective for both learners and practitioners in the field.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the pace at which innovative health technologies are being designed, developed, and implemented. This inevitably presents new risks and challenges, not least, how to ensure that these technologies are appropriate for particular environments. In this sense, ‘environments’ may be people in various roles (e.g. patients, users, designers, evaluators) or non-human constructs such as organizations, work practices, guidelines and protocols, buildings, and markets. This book presents papers from CSHI 2023, the latest in the series of biennial conferences on Context Sensitive Health Informatics, held in Sydney, Australia, on 5 and 6 July 2023. The theme of CSHI 2023 was Context Sensitive Health Informatics and the Pandemic Boost, and the book includes 19 papers and 7 poster abstracts covering a variety of topics. These are divided into 5 sections: clinician perceptions and use of health technologies; workforce development in health informatics; aligning workflows and work systems to health technologies; co-design, equitable evaluation, and sustainable implementation of digital health tools; and big data and information management. The book provides an overview of the latest health information systems and of recent research in the area of context and health information technologies, and will be of interest to all those working in the field of health informatics.

Medical informatics and electronic healthcare have many benefits to offer in terms of quality of life for patients, healthcare personnel, citizens and society in general. But evidence-based medicine needs quality information if it is to lead to quality of health and thus to quality of life. This book presents the full papers accepted for presentation at the MIE2012 conference, held in Pisa, Italy, in August 2012. Artificial intelligence (AI) is once again in the news, with many major figures urging caution as developments in the technology accelerate. AI impacts all aspects of our lives, but perhaps the discipline of Biomedical Informatics is more affected than most, and is an area where the possible pitfalls of the technology might have particularly serious consequences. This book presents the papers delivered at ICIMTH 2023, the 21st International Conference on Informatics, Management, and Technology in Healthcare, held in Athens, Greece, from 1-3 July 2023. The ICIMTH conferences form a series of scientific events which offers a platform for scientists working in the field of biomedical and health informatics from all continents to gather and exchange research findings and experience. The title of the 2023 conference was Healthcare Transformation with Informatics and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting the importance of AI to healthcare informatics. A total of 252 submissions were received by the Program Committee, of which 149 were accepted as full papers, 13 as short communications, and 14 as poster papers after review. The papers cover a wide range of technologies, and topics include imaging, sensors, biomedical equipment, and management and organizational aspects, as well as legal and social issues. The book provides a timely overview of informatics and technology in healthcare during this time of extremely fast developments, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

This book presents the proceedings of the 33rd Medical Informatics Europe Conference, MIE2023, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 22 to 25 May 2023. The theme of MIE2023 was ‘Caring is Sharing – Exploiting Value in Data for Health and Innovation’, stressing the increasing importance of sharing digital-health data and the related challenges. The sharing of health data is developing rapidly, both in Europe and beyond, so the focus of the conference was on the enabling of trustworthy sharing of data to improve health. Topics covered include healthcare, community care, self-care, public health, and the innovation and development of future-proof digital-health solutions, and the almost 300 papers divided into 10 chapters also cover important advances in the sub domains of biomedical informatics: decision support systems, clinical information systems, clinical research informatics, knowledge management and representation, consumer health informatics, natural language processing, public health informatics, privacy, ethical and societal aspects among them. Describing innovative approaches to the collection, organization, analysis, and data-sharing related to health and wellbeing, the book contributes to the expertise required to take medical informatics to the next level, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Digital technologies have become an integral part of all our lives, and the area of healthcare is no exception. This book presents the proceedings of the 17th annual conference on Health Informatics meets Digital Health (dHealth 2023), held in Vienna, Austria, on 16 and 17 May 2023. The conference series provides a forum for researchers and decision makers, health professionals, healthcare providers, and government and industry representatives to present and discuss innovative digital-health solutions with the aim of improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare using digital technologies. The ‘d’ in dHealth encompasses concepts such as digitalization, datafication and data-driven decision making, as well as predictive modeling and “deep” health for better patient outcomes and sustainability in healthcare, and the 47 papers included here offer an insight into state-of-the-art aspects of dHealth, including the design and evaluation of user interfaces, patient-centered solutions, electronic health/medical/patient records, telemedical approaches and solutions, predictive models, machine learning in healthcare and biomedical data analytics. The book provides an interdisciplinary overview of current research activities in digital health, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Current ideas about human diversity often highlight the importance of the relational and dynamic nature of interactions across different domains of human function, activities and participation. Universal Design (UD) is defined as design that is usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible and without the need for adaptation or specialization. The term ‘universal’ is intended to embrace human diversity, making it the opposite of the one-size-fits-all approach. The Universal Design conference series was started in 2012 with the aim of promoting UD as a discipline-independent philosophy and approach which can transcend the boundaries between communities of knowledge and communities of practice. The first part of this book is a collection of 6 invited papers arising from some of the informal and semi-formal discussions and debates which took place as part of the UD 2022 conference in Italy. Authors were invited to submit papers presenting real case studies, and asked to discuss not only the opportunities and strengths, but also the challenges encountered when implementing UD in various domains. The second part of the book presents 6 essays by researchers who have worked on different aspects of UD over the years, each written from the perspective of the author’s own research strand. The book will be of interest to all those working in the field of universal design and inclusivity.
