This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT 2004, held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in March 2004. The 42 revised full papers presented together with 2 industrial application papers, 15 software demos, and 3 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 294 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on distributed, mobile and peer-to-peer database systems; data mining and knowledge discovery; trustworthy database systems; innovative query processing techniques for XML data; data and information on the web; query processing techniques for spatial databases; foundations of query processing; advanced query processing and optimization; query processing techniques for data and schemas; multimedia and quality-aware systems; indexing techniques; and imprecise sequence pattern queries.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed joint post-proceedings of five workshops held as part of the 9th International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT 2004, held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in March 2004. The 55 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers and the summaries of 2 panels were selected from numerous submissions during two rounds of reviewing and revision. In accordance with the topical focus of the respective workshops, the papers are organized in sections on database technology in general (PhD Workshop), database technologies for handling XML information on the Web, pervasive information management, peer-to-peer computing and databases, and clustering information over the Web.

The Eighth International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT 2002, was held in Prague, Czech Republic, March 25–27, 2002. It marks the 50th anniversary of Charles University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and is the most recent in a series of conferences dedicated to the dissemination and exchange of the latest advances in data management. Previous conferences occurred in Konstanz, Valencia, Avignon, Cambridge, Vienna, and Venice. The topical theme of this year’s conference is Data Management in the New Millennium, which encourages the community to see beyond the management of massive databases by conventional database management systems and to extend database technology to support new services and application areas. The intention is to spur greater interest in more integrated solutions to user problems, which often implies the consideration of data management issues in entire information systems infrastructures. There is data (almost) everywhere, and data access is needed (almost) always and everywhere. New technologies, services, and app- cations that involve the broader notion of data management are emerging more rapidly than ever, and the database community has much to o?er. The call for papers attracted numerous submissions, including 207 research papers, which is a new record for EDBT. The program committee selected 36 research papers, 6 industrial and applications papers, 13 software demos, and 6 tutorials for presentation at the conference. In addition, the conference program includes three keynote speeches, by Jari Ahola, Ian Horrocks, and Hans-J ̈org Schek, and a panel.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT 2006, held in Munich, Germany, in March 2006. The 60 revised research papers presented together with eight industrial application papers, 20 software demos, and three invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 352 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections.

This volume comprises papers from the following ?ve workshops that were part of the complete program for the International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT) held in Heraklion, Greece, March 2004: • ICDE/EDBT Joint Ph. D. Workshop (PhD) • Database Technologies for Handling XML-information on the Web (DataX) • Pervasive Information Management (PIM) • Peer-to-Peer Computing and Databases (P2P&DB) • Clustering Information Over the Web (ClustWeb) Together, the ?ve workshops featured 61 high-quality papers selected from appr- imately 180 submissions. It was, therefore, dif?cult to decide on the papers that were to beacceptedforpresentation. Webelievethattheacceptedpaperssubstantiallycontribute to their particular ?elds of research. The workshops were an excellent basis for intense and highly fruitful discussions. The quality and quantity of papers show that the areas of interest for the workshops are highly active. A large number of excellent researchers are working on the aforementioned ?elds producing research output that is not only of interest for other researchers but also for industry. The organizers and participants of the workshops were highly satis?ed with the output. The high quality of the presenters and workshop participants contributed to the success of each workshop. The amazing environment of Heraklion and the location of the EDBT conference also contributed to the overall success. Last, but not least, our sincere thanks to the conference organizers – the organizing team was always willing to help and if there were things that did not work, assistance was quickly available.

The 32 revised full papers presented together with one invited keynote were selected from a total of 191 submissions. The book is divided in sections on similarity search and indexing, query optimization on the Web, Algorithms for data mining, modelling in OLAP, query processing and storage management, aggregation and summary data, object-oriented and active databases, view maintenance and integrity, databases and the Web, workflow and scientific databases.
