Annotation In the face of climate change and resource scarcity, energy supply systems are on the verge of a major transformation, which mainly includes the introduction of new components and their integration into the existing infrastructures, new network configurations and reliable topologies, optimal design and novel operation schemes, and new incentives and business models. This revolution is affecting the current paradigm and demanding that energy systems be integrated into multi-carrier energy hubs. It is highly increasing the interactions between today's energy systems at various scales and future intelligent energy systems, which are able to incorporate an increasing amount renewable energy sources. This transformation is also accommodating active participation of end-users as responsive prosumers at different scales which in turn helps to reduce energy costs and to mitigate carbon footprints. This book covers the mentioned promising and dynamic areas of research and development, and reports on contributions in design, control and optimization of integrated energy systems. The contents of the book which are gathered based on the accepted articles in the special issue on Advances in Integrated Energy systems Design, Control and Optimization also covers a variety of topics, ranging from operation and control of small-scale electrical networks to the complex energy systems design and planning.

Optimal Operation of Integrated Multi-Energy Systems Under Uncertainty discusses core concepts, advanced modeling and key operation strategies for integrated multi-energy systems geared for use in optimal operation. The book particularly focuses on reviewing novel operating strategies supported by relevant code in MATLAB and GAMS. It covers foundational concepts, key challenges and opportunities in operational implementation, followed by discussions of conventional approaches to modeling electricity, heat and gas networks. This modeling is the base for more detailed operation strategies for optimal operation of integrated multi-energy systems under uncertainty covered in the latter part of the work. Reviews advanced modeling approaches relevant to the integration of electricity, heat and gas systems in operation studies Covers stochastic and robust optimal operation of integrated multi-energy systems Evaluates MPC based, real-time dispatch of integrated multi-energy systems Considers uncertainty modeling for stochastic and robust optimization Assesses optimal operation and real-time dispatch for multi-energy building complexes

Distributed energy technologies are gaining popularity nowadays; however, due to the highly intermittent characteristics of distributed energy resources, a larger penetration of these resources into the distribution grid network becomes of major concern. The main issue is to cope with the intermittent nature of the renewable sources alongside the requirements for power quality and system stability. Unlike traditional power systems, the control and optimization of complex energy systems comprising of wind, solar, thermal, and energy storage becomes difficult in many aspects, such as modelling, integration, operation, coordination and planning etc. This means that energy conversion as per the standards imposed by the energy market is unachievable without adequate control, management, and optimization. This edited book serves as a resource for the engineers, scientists and professionals working on distributed energy systems. The book is an extensive collection of state-of-the-art studies on advanced control paradigms for complex energy systems, with emphasis on the optimization and management of the high penetration of distributed energy resources into power distribution networks. Readers will find the book inspiring and useful whilst carrying out their own research in distributed energy systems. Key features • An extensive collection of state-of-the-art studies on advanced control paradigms for complex energy systems.• Emphasis on the optimization and management of high penetration of distributed energy resources into power/energy distribution networks.• Serves as a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, academicians, experienced professionals, and research scholars who are working in management of energy systems.

Integrated Energy Systems for Multigeneration looks at how measures implemented to limit greenhouse gas emissions must consider smart utilization of available limited resources and employ renewable resources through integrated energy systems and the utilization of waste energy streams. This reference considers the main concepts of thermal and conventional energy systems through detailed systems description, analyses of methodologies, performance assessment and optimization, and illustrative examples and case studies. The book examines producing power and heat with cooling, freshwater, green fuels and other useful commodities designed to tackle rising greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. With worldwide energy demand increasing, and the consequences of meeting supply with current dependency on fossil fuels, investigating and developing sustainable alternatives to the conventional energy systems is a growing concern for global stakeholders. Analyzes the links between clean energy technologies and achieving sustainable development Illustrates several examples of design and analysis of integrated energy systems Discusses performance assessment and optimization Uses illustrative examples and global case studies to explain methodologies and concepts

Optimal Operation of Integrated Energy Systems Under Uncertainties: Distributionally Robust and Stochastic Models discusses new solutions to the rapidly emerging concerns surrounding energy usage and environmental deterioration. Integrated energy systems (IESs) are acknowledged to be a promising approach to increasing the efficiency of energy utilization by exploiting complementary (alternative) energy sources and storages. IESs show favorable performance for improving the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and accelerating low-carbon transition. However, as more renewables penetrate the energy system, their highly uncertain characteristics challenge the system, with significant impacts on safety and economic issues. To this end, this book provides systematic methods to address the aggravating uncertainties in IESs from two aspects: distributionally robust optimization and online operation. Presents energy scheduling, considering power, gas, and carbon markets concurrently based on distributionally robust optimization methods Helps readers design day-ahead scheduling schemes, considering both decision-dependent uncertainties and decision-independent uncertainties for IES Covers online scheduling and energy auctions by stochastic optimization methods Includes analytic results given to measure the performance gap between real performance and ideal performance
