African Leadership

Challenging the myth of African Canadian leadership "in crisis," this book opens a broad vista of inquiry into the many and dynamic ways leadership practices occur in Black Canadian communities. Exploring topics including Black women’s contributions to African Canadian communities, the Black Lives Matter movement, Black LGBTQ, HIV/AIDS advocacy, motherhood and grieving, mentoring, and anti-racism, contributors appraise the complex history and contemporary reality of blackness and leadership in Canada. With Canada as a complex site of Black diasporas, contributors offer an account of multiple forms of leadership and suggest that through surveillance and disruption, practices of self-determined Black leadership are incompatible with, and threatening to, White "structures" of power in Canada. As a whole, African Canadian Leadership offers perspectives that are complex, non-aligned, and in critical conversation about class, gender, sexuality, and the politics of African Canadian communities.

Africa puzzles the best of minds. It is the richest of the seven continents in natural resources and yet her people are the poorest. Why? Could it be it is the jinx of our African Leader’s policies, governance, or politics? The real asset of a nation is not its natural resources but people with right values. At independence for colonies became free nations, able to chart for themselves whatever course they had the ability and determination to follow. They could have, as some did, nationalized foreign owned corporations. They could have stopped primary commodity exports and ended import from the West. Of course, such radical policies would have consequences. But these were more likely to have involved the elites losing the benefits of foreign aid. If Cuba, only a few kilometers from the capitalist mega-power, the U.S, could pursue an independent economic agenda and survive, is there a reason why African nations could not have done the same? This book explores the many complex matters that African Leaders may have to grapple with.

Focusing on both pre-colonial and post-colonial eras, this book aims to cultivate a greater understanding of globalisation processes in the context of leadership behaviour in Africa. This handbook explores the challenges and opportunities for leadership and conflict response in the context of Africa at several levels. Leadership plays a vital role in affecting conflict response but is frequently only examined at the macro level of state, government, and international organizations. This handbook addresses the need to explore challenges and opportunities for leadership at several levels: macro (global, regional, national), meso (NGOs, religious groups, academics), and micro (civil society organizations, youth groups, women’s organizations).
