Ageing Men And Social Relations

While there has been a gradual increase in scholarship on men, ageing and masculinities, little attention has been paid to the social relations of men in later life and the implications for enhancing their social wellbeing and counteracting ageist discourse. Bringing together scholars in social gerontology and the social sciences from across Global North and South nations, this collection fills the gaps in key texts by foregrounding older men’s experiences. It provides new perspectives across the intersections of old age, ethnicities, class and sexual and gender identity, paying particular attention to older men from seldom heard or marginalised groups.

This book is a follow-up to Arber and Ginn's award winning Connecting Gender and Ageing (1995). It contains original chapters from eminent writers on gender and ageing, addressing newly emergent areas within gender and ageing, including gender identity and masculinity in later life. Early work on gender and ageing was dominated by a focus on older women. The present collection breaks with this tradition by emphasizing changing gender roles and relationships, gender identity and an examination of masculinities in midlife and later life. A key theme running through the book is the need to reconceptualize partnership status, in order to understand the implications for women and men of widowhood, divorce and new forms of relationships, such as Living Apart Together (LAT-relationships). Another is the influence of socio-economic circumstances on how ageing is experienced and transitions are negotiated. The book illustrates new ways of thinking about old age and indicates policy implications, especially concerning the nature of service provision for older people. It will change the ways in which social scientists conceptualize later life. Men, Masculinities, and Aging explores the intersections of generations, class, geographies, and masculinities. It offers a fresh perspective on men’s experiences with bodily aging, growing older within ageist societies, and navigating the virtual absence of cultural guidelines for being an old man.

To begin new relationships in later life is increasingly common in large parts of the Western world. This timely book addresses the gap in knowledge about late life repartnering and provides a comprehensive map of the changing landscape of late life intimacy. Part of the Ageing in a Global Context series, the book examines the changing structural conditions of intimacy and ageing in late modernity. How do longer lives, changing norms and new technologies affect older people’s relationship careers, their attitudes to repartnering and in the formation of new relationships? Which forms do these new unions take? What does a new intimate relationship offer older men and women and what are the consequences for social integration? What is the role and meaning of sex? Until recently, older men were not a social phenomenon commanding great attention. Older men are a distinct minority among men, accounting for 15 percent of the adult male population. Among elders, older men are still outnumbered by older women three to two, and there are only two men for every five women over age 85. However, the importance of gender to age, and age to gender, is being acknowledged by gerontologists as well as gender scholars. This work is the first thorough study of the research examining older men as men. Thompson was able to locate more than 750 articles, which are organized by subject (Gendered Aging, Health and Well-Being, Sexuality, Suicide and Alcohol, Religiosity and Spirituality, Stereotypes and Social Constructions, Relationships and Social Life, Family Relations, Caregiving, Economics and Retirement, Living Arrangements, and Resources and Needs) and selectively annotated.
