Excerpt from Agriculture in Canada: Modern Principles of Agriculture Applicable to Canadian Farming to Yield Greater Profit In a country famous for her vast wheat fields and whose chief industry is - and must continue to be for many years - agriculture, the need of a standard work on this important subject by a competent writer is apparent. Of the few Canadian writers with a practical knowledge of farming in Canada, who have attempted to blaze the trail for the newcomer or help the old settler with advice born of long personal experience, none occupy such a pre-eminent position as William Rennie. Unusually successful in all departments of agriculture and with the gift of imparting information on the most prosaic subject in a fascinating manner, his personality was a potent factor in the elevation of farm work to the science of agriculture. By precept and example he enriched farm life in this country, and did much to lift it from the deadly routine which was rapidly depleting the rural population of its young life. The author came into national prominence by winning the first Silver Medal presented by the Agricultural and Arts Association of Ontario for the cleanest and best-managed farm in the province, while his brother, the late Simpson Rennie, who occupied the Rennie homestead in Scarboro (Ont.), won the Gold Medal. Excerpt from Dry Farming in Western Canada The many imperfections of the book are known full well to the writer. It is being published not because it contains the last word on successful farm practice in the west, but rather because it presents under one cover a more or less complete statement of our present know ledge concerning the methods of producing crops at a profit under relatively dry conditions. It is hoped that the book may be found of some value to all farmers and students who are interested in the agricultural problems of the Prairie Provinces. Excerpt from Farm Weeds of Canada The first edition Of Farm Weeds of Canada was distributed free to public libraries, universities, colleges, high schools, rural schools, agri cultural societies and farmers' institutes and clubs. The book was de signed to stimulate interest in the study Of farm weeds in general, their habits of growth and the best methods of combating them. It was distributed with a view to make it conveniently available for the pur pose of reference, to all who are interested in agricultural pursuits but particularly to farmers and pupils Of schools in farming districts. The second edition has been prepared and published to meet the urgent requests from individuals who desire the book for their personal use. The information presented in the text is useful because the illustrations Of weeds and weed seeds make it intelligible to farmers and others who are not expert in the nomenclature of plants. The expense entailed in the preparation, printing and binding of seventy six coloured plates as contained in this volume precludes it from the list of those publications Of the Department Of Agriculture that are distributed generally and free Of charge. The nominal price fixed for its sale will restrict its distribution to those who will preserve and make proper use of it, and will meet a part Of the unusual expense incurred in its issue. Excerpt from Agricultural Education and Research in Canada Though agriculture is not a science in the same sense that chem istry, biology and physics are sciences. There is in a very real and vital sense a'science of agriculture in which the basic sciences l have named and others are-called upon to contribute towards the solution of problems affecting farming and to establish the truth: which must furnish the foundation necessary for the rational coriact and develop ment of the art, To elaborate this thought somewhat: it is evident. In the first place. That agriculture is a vocation or occupation whereby men earn a livelihood and in which they till the soil. Sow and harvest crops, feed and raise livestock. It is an art or craft, therefore. Requiring skill and experience in manipulation for its successful prosecution. It is obvious that above all the farmer is a director of agencies (for he himself creates nothing). Agencies which involve the life of the soil. The life of. Plants. The life of animals. He ought to know how these agencies may best be directed and controlled From this view. And I believe it is the c'orrect one. The science of agriculture. As supplying the basis for all this work, is y largely a subdivision of our latest development in pure chemistry, bio-chemistry; i say largely, _ for it is not exclusively bio-chemistry; physics. Meteorology, economics and other sciences mast be called upon in the attempt to establish the truth and to mark the way for further progress in the art of farm mg.
