Allegiance to God and Corps is a memoir that explores the life experiences of Hafiz Naim Ali Camp, a US Marine who converted to Islam when he was a staff sergeant in 1994. He shares sixteen years of experiences, both positive and negative, as he took advantage of the opportunity to meet diverse groups of people and to share stories about their families and cultures. Of all the places he visited, the two that had the biggest impact on him were Palestine and Bosnia, because of the atrocities the people experienced under the ruling forces that governed each of them. He recalls firsthand stories from two Bosnian brothers who fought in the Bosnian War as teenagers and who went on to become marines. Camp also talks about his relationships and experiences with six military Muslim chaplainsfour in the navy, one in the air force, and one in the army. All of these stories provide a vivid picture of what its like to be a Muslim in the US military, as well as the challenges it brings each day. Finally, he writes about the tragic events of 9/11, Fort Hood, and the controversial Ground Zero Masjid incidents that have had a devastating impact on the Muslim communities world-wide.

This book shows how creative writing gives voice to the drama and nuance of religious experience in a way that is rarely captured by sermons, reports, and the minutes of church meetings. The author explores the history of religious Dissent and Evangelicalism in Australia through a variety of literary responses to landscape, from both men and women, lay and ordained. The book explores transnational themes, along with themes of migration and travel across the Australian continent. The author gives insight into the literature of Protestant Dissent, concerned as it is with travel, belonging, and the intersection of national and religious identity. Much of the writing is situated on the road: a soldier returning from the Great War, a child on a lone adventure, a night-time journey through urban slums; all of these are in some way dependent on the theme of “walking with Jesus” as the Holy Land travelogues make explicit. God in the Landscape draws the links between landscape, literature, and spirituality with imagination and insight and is an important contribution to the historical study of religion and the environment.

This work examines, among other topics, the personal oath of loyalty that the officers of the German army swore to Adolf Hitler on August 2, 1934. It discusses how the majority of officers--those who did not become conspirators against him--complied with Hitler's orders until May 1945 despite his cruel treatment of soldiers, militarily unsound strategy and tactics, and the widespread destruction and crimes he and his forces committed. The oath taken by the officers had a strong psychological effect among a proud corps with a long history of obedience and honor. They followed Hitler to the end even though they knew they were fighting a losing battle. The author also examines why and how only a few officers, the conspirators, began to break away, lose trust in Hitler, oppose him and finally stage an assassination attempt. This history traces the development within the German army from 1918 of the philosophies of loyalty and disloyalty--and obedience and disobedience--as challenged by the Hitlerian oath of loyalty.

Radical understanding of ourselves is now possible to our very coregreater insight into whom we really are, where we came from, what our evolution has been, what it has meant, and what it means now and for the future. That quest has been an intellectual one, but it also has been a spiritual oneand answers with spiritual meaning are now possible, even for the atheists, doubters, skeptics, humanists, and freethinkers. In this study, author Douglas Falknor explores the issue of how religion has evolved along with humanity. A nonbeliever, Falknor seeks to answer a host of age-old questions: Are we born addicted to religion? Why do we have religion? Is there a God? How has religion evolved and created the hardwired spirituality within us? Falknor goes beyond the God gene and surveys recent thought and reveals original interpretations of what it all means. He traces this spiritual quest for nonbelievers and calls this the Path of the Doubtful Sojourner. Through this discussion, Falknor seeks to pave the way toward greater spiritual and psychological fulfillment.
