Applied Geomorphology

This is the first book to bring together practical examples from around the world to show how geomorphological evidence can help in effective land utilisation and hazard risk assessment. This book, first published in 1982, forms the proceedings volume of the 11th Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium. Chapters cover various coastline phenomena, glacial and periglacial processes, carbonate terrains, and specific applications of geomorphic knowledge and techniques.

Applied geomorphology aims to understand the constraints that natural dynamics impose on human activities, as well as societal impacts on geomorphic forms and processes. It is therefore concerned with the analysis and interpretation of landforms resulting from the interaction between anthropic and non-anthropic (so-called natural) processes, using methodologies specific to this scientific area. There are many natural hazards such as floods, landslides, volcanoes and earthquakes in the Asia-Pacific Region. Nevertheless, there are few studies of such natural hazards in this region and knowledge about their mitigation is of the utmost importance. This book documents the use of geomorphological maps showing the state of flooding; these maps allow predictions to be made. The author has compiled geomorphological maps and documentation of their validation, and the maps allow not only estimation of flooding, but also prediction of soil liquefaction caused by earthquakes.
