Argon

Explains the characteristics of argon, where it is found, how it is used by humans, and its relationship to other elements found in the periodic table.

The users of this volume will find (1) the experimental solubility data of argon gas in liquids as reported in the scientific literature, (2) tables of smoothed mole fraction solubility data for the systems which were studied over a temperature interval, and (3) tables of either tentative or recommended solubility data when two or more laboratories reported solubility data over the same range of temperature and pressure for a system. Users have the option of using the experimental values, either directly or in their own smoothing equations, or of using the smoothed values prepared by the compilers and evaluators

Perhaps no dating method has the wide range of applicability as does the potassium argon dating method from either consideration of the ranges of ages which can be dated or the availability of suitable material to date. Minerals as young as tens of thousands of years to minerals billions of years old have been successfully dated. Many minerals retain for times of the order of billions of years the daughter, Ar40, and many minerals contain as a component K40 the parent element, potassium being a common element in the earth's crust. As a result, most rock contains at least one mineral which can be successfully dated by the potassium argon method. Even though this method has been applied for over fifteen years, there is as yet no work which summarizes the experimental techniques and the results available. The sixtieth birthday ofW. GENTNER, one of the pioneers in this field of research, is a suitable time to present such a summary.

Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry: Thermodynamic Tables Project is a result of a chemistry conference in 1963. The text contains various studies, lessons, and experimental data that are relevant to the field. The book is divided into two chapters; the first one includes lessons about the constituent tables, encompassing the physical constants and fixed points, vapor pressure equations, PVT surface equations, and derived properties. For each of these topics, the corresponding formula is explained. Chapter 2 highlights the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) tables and explores the table's physical constants and PVT equations, together with its relevant subtopics. The last part of the book illustrates different tables that are closely associated with the constituent and IUPAC tables. The emission of short wavelength visible light from argon-hydrogen mixtures irradiated by a pulsed 1.7 MeV electron beam has been studied, as well as the absorption of 4416A radiation in the mixture. Absorption was found to increase faster than linearly with increased argon pressure. A new multipass gain or absorption measuring technique was devised which measures small amounts of gain with high sensitivity. At the highest excited state density obtained, 3 x 10 to the 13th power /cc, the absorption in argon-hydrogen mixtures is positive.
