This volume raises troubling questions about the heritage of the Reformation - with respect to the Peasants' War, the Anabaptists, Jews and Muslims. The authors come from different churches - Lutheran, Mennonite and Reformed. They analyze the limitations of the Reformation in their own historical context and offer constructive theological and ethical reflections to we achieve the challenges of global economic justice, the groaning earth of radical commitment to peace and inter-religious reconciliation.

At first the end of the "Cold War" seemed to mark a period of relative rest. However, it became apparent that we have not reached the "end of history". As a matter of fact, the world is confronted by new political constellations of so far unknown martial intensity. Although, Muslim terrorism and the revival of tribalism and nationalism are closely connected. At the same time, the international community proves mostly powerless, as a result of the cooling relationship between East and West. These developments offer challenging questions for Western societies. Both in Germany and in the Anglo-Saxon world, debates on the concepts of Just peace/ Just war have intensified, but mutual engagement between these contexts has remained scarce. Against this background a conference was held in Apeldoorn, in a Dutch "interspace", in 2016, in which ethicists from both contexts were involved. The present volume contains the edited version of the seven contributions to this conference, supplemented with four articles by others that were written deliberately for this volume. Jahrhunderts mit neuen politischen Konstellationen ungekannter kriegerischer Intensität konfrontiert. Dabei hängen islamistischer Terror und das Wiederaufleben von Tribalismus und Nationalismus zusammen. Hinzu kommt, dass das Ost-West-Verhältnis sich zunehmend verschlechtert, wodurch die Machtinstrumente der internationalen Gemeinschaft kraftlos geworden sind. Diese Entwicklungen stellen herausfordernde Fragen an die westlichen Gesellschaften. Sowohl in Deutschland als auch in der angelsächsischen Welt ist die Debatte über die Themen Gerechter Frieden/Gerechter Krieg neu aufgebrochen, aber sie findet weitgehend getrennt voneinander statt. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat 2016 in Apeldoorn, im niederländischen "Zwischenraum", eine Konferenz stattgefunden, an der Ethiker aus beiden Kontexten beteiligt waren. Dieser Band dokumentiert deren sieben Vorträge, ergänzt um vier Aufsätze, die speziell für diesen Band geschrieben wurden. Mercy is an important concept in the Christian moral tradition. It is one of the most prominent divine attributes, and is embodied in Jesus Christ. This volume investigates the concept of mercy from a Protestant point of view with respect to its consequences for an increasingly non-Christian society. Starting from its biblical origins, a group of international authors explicates the intrinsically messianic logic of divine mercy for its potential in current theological ethics, practical ecclesiology, systematic and public theology.

The three volumes present the current state of international research on Martin Luther’s life and work and the Reformation's manifold influences on history, churches, politics, culture, philosophy, arts and society up to the 21st century. The work is initiated by the Fondazione per le scienze religiose Giovanni XXIII (Bologna) in cooperation with the European network Refo500. This handbook is also available in German.

Venice and Padua are neighboring cities with a topographical and geopolitical distinction. Venice is a port city in the Venetian Lagoon, which opened up towards Byzantium and the East. Padua on the mainland was founded in Roman times and is a university city, a place of Humanism and research into antiquity. The contributions analyze works of art as aesthetic formulations of their places of origin, which however also have an effect on and expand their surroundings. International experts investigate how these two different concepts stimulated each other in the Early Modern Age, and how the exchange worked.

It is no secret that Christianity has been widely rejected in Japan with less than two percent of the population identifying as Christian. The dominant worldview in Japan is deeply animistic, with beliefs such as the Japanese mana-concept, ki (気), the Japanese soul-concept, and the concept of God/god(s), kami (神), being deeply rooted in the culture and fundamentally influencing society. Dr Martin Heißwolf, with his years of experience in Japan, critically examines Japanese animism in light of core Christian beliefs, such as the concepts of “peace” and “salvation.” Central to Japanese people’s rejection of Christian truth is the diametric opposition of its supernatural message to the natural focus of Japanese animistic folk religion. Heißwolf’s meticulous study is framed squarely within missiological thought and praxis so Christians serving in Japanese contexts are better able to communicate the message of the gospel by more fully understanding Japanese people, people by whom God wants to be known.

In the early 1970s, a number of West German left-wing activists took up arms, believing that revolution would lead to social change. This publication questions the separation of political violence from feminist politics and offers a new understanding of left-wing female terrorists' actions as feminist practices that challenged existing gender ideologies. The author draws on archival sources, unpublished letters, and interviews with former activists to paint an interdisciplinary picture of West Germany's most notorious political group, the Red Army Faction (der Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF)).
