19th-century novel of adultery and remorse. Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) was celebrated even in her own lifetime as Austria's foremost nineteenth-century woman writer.Beyond Atonement (Unsühnbar, 1889), loosely based on an actual event in a high-class Austrian family, is a novel about adultery: Maria marries Hermann Dornach, though she is in love with Felix Tessin; two years later, she commits adultery with Tessin, conceiving a child whom she alone knows to be illegitimate; when her husband and their legitimate son die in an accident, she reveals her infidelity. Her unforgiving family and her own remorse set Maria apart from the protagonists of other nineteenth-century novels of adultery such as Goethe's Elective Affinities and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Beyond Atonement is a companion piece to Ebner's best-known tale of village life, Their Pavel (Das Gemeindekind), also published by Camden House. Dr VANESSA VAN ORNAM is a translator for the city government of Berlin.

Attempts to reach an understanding of how to live a Christian life in the contemporary context have never been more necessary. This is the aim of the International Symposium: Beyond Secular Faith, an annual conference held in Granada, Spain. This volume represents the fruits of over seven years of scholarship. The title Beyond Secular Faith suggests we are interested in (re)discovering and reflectively elaborating ways to overcome the limits imposed by the dominant contemporary culture. We are convinced that only a faith liberated from the conceptual restrictions and reductions (put forward by secular philosophy and theology) and centered radically on Christ can flourish in the dimension that is proper to faith; that is, in all spheres of human life. Featuring contributions from internationally recognized philosophers and theologians such as Tracey Rowland, Jarosław Jagiello, Rocco Buttiglione, Alison Milbank, Massimo Borghesi, John Milbank, and others, we will explore a diversity of questions from this common perspective: the light of revelation illuminates how Christians should live in the modern world, leading to a new beginning.

The authors of this book claim that to abandon the Christian doctrine of the Atonement is to abandon the central witness of the gospel, for atonement speaks of nothing less than God 's reconciliation of the world in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Drawing on the classical theories of the Atonement, engaging in creative theological construction, they present a set of cogent, cohesive alternatives to either rejecting the doctrine out of hand, or uncritically accepting it.

How does what happened 2000 years ago in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ radically alter the human nature and life situation of men and women in every generation up to the present day? Pursuit of this question provided the initial impetus for this book, a study of two vital themes pertaining to the doctrine of atonement - representation and substitution. The author explores their meaning and role within the theologies of three significantly diverse contemporary theologians - Dorothee Sölle, John Macquarrie, and Karl Barth - concluding with a comparative analysis of all three perspectives in relation to each other.

This book seeks to set forth Jesus Christ as the alpha and the omega of what God has for us. It portrays the universe of God with the redeemer as its soul and center. It presents the self-sacrifice of Christ as that which gives him his place forever. The vision of this volume is “the lamb in the midst of the throne.” Its message is: “The Lamb that hath been slain” and “is alive forevermore” redeems us by his sacrifice by redeeming us unto it. So, what his sacrifice is to us, gives us our place forever. If all thought obscuring what he has done for us and can be to us, is a barrier to his best for us; surely any interpretation which reveals that utmost he can be to us, ought to be most welcome; for, it seeks to present to mind and heart the mind and heart of the message and mission of Jesus Christ.
