The social sciences have seen a substantial increase in comparative and multi-sited ethnographic projects over the last three decades. Yet, at present, researchers seeking to design comparative field projects have few scholarly works detailing how comparison is conducted in divergent ethnographic approaches. In Beyond the Case, Corey M. Abramson and Neil Gong have gathered together several experts in field research to address these issues by showing how practitioners employing contemporary iterations of ethnographic traditions such as phenomenology, grounded theory, positivism, and interpretivism, use comparison in their works. The contributors connect the long history of comparative (and anti-comparative) ethnographic approaches to their contemporary uses. He argues that tourism, once seen as rather peripheral by anthropologists, has to be treated as a phenomenon of major importance, both because the size of the flows of people and capital involved, and because it is one of the major sites in which the meeting and hybridization of culture takes place. Tourism, he suggests, leads not to the destruction of local cultures, as many critics have implied, but rather to the emergence of new cultural forms. The central part of the book presents a detailed case-study of the island of Bali in Indonesia. It traces the development of tourism there during the colonial period, and the ways in which "Balinese traditional culture" was developed first by western artists and scholars in the colonial period, and more recently by Balinese government officials in the guise of "cultural tourism." The general theme of the "presentation of tradition" is also discussed in relation to Toraja funerals in the Indonesian province of Sulawesi, western visitors to the Sepik River in Papua-New-Guinea, and the small city of Tono in northern Japan which has become a center for the study of folk-lore.

This book is about extending index theory to some examples where non-Fredholm operators arise. It focuses on one aspect of the problem of what replaces the notion of spectral flow and the Fredholm index when the operators in question have zero in their essential spectrum. Most work in this topic stems from the so-called Witten index that is discussed at length here. The new direction described in these notes is the introduction of `spectral flow beyond the Fredholm case'. Creating a coherent picture of numerous investigations and scattered notions of the past 50 years, this work carefully introduces spectral flow, the Witten index and the spectral shift function and describes their relationship. After the introduction, Chapter 2 carefully reviews Double Operator Integrals, Chapter 3 describes the class of so-called p-relative trace class perturbations, followed by the construction of Krein's spectral shift function in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 reviews the analytic approach to spectral flow, culminating in Chapter 6 in the main abstract result of the book, namely the so-called principal trace formula. Chapter 7 completes the work with illustrations of the main results using explicit computations on two examples: the Dirac operator in Rd, and a differential operator on an interval. Throughout, attention is paid to the history of the subject and earlier references are provided accordingly. The book is aimed at experts in index theory as well as newcomers to the field.

Conrad's new book, "Beyond Real Estate Licensing: Case Study Analysis of Behavioral Assessment Relationship Applied to Human Performance" is an outgrowth of his doctoral studies. The specific problem this research addresses pertains to whether behavioral readiness has an impact upon real estate brokerage sales performance. Although real estate students may score high on the real estate licensing examinations, it may not prove the students ability to perform in a real estate brokerage performance sales environment. The most important performance criteria in real estate sales could be conceived as a developed personality capacity and alignment of motivational values. It is also noted that learning sales facilitators can not guarantee the knowledge transfer to performance unless, behavioral readiness is presented. Therefore behavioral assessment analysis can be considered as an integral aide to performance improvement. The purpose of this study was to establish the organizational responsibility towards behavioral assessment analysis during the pre-employment phase. The results of this study indicate that behavioral assessments may improve the overall recruitment and selection capability and to identify the necessary behavioral readiness that is necessary for knowledge transfer into sales performance.
